Dortmund's start to the season has picked up serious momentum since their opening setback in the German Super Cup.
Kovac's side followed a 2-0 Bundesliga win over Hamburger SV with a 5-0 DFB-Pokal romp over amateur side HEBC Hamburg, a league victory over Hoffenheim, and Tuesday's 3-2 Champions League win over Villarreal, in which Serhou Guirassy continued his red-hot goalscoring form with a brace.
A win here would make it three straight Bundesliga victories for Kovac's side, who will have European football on their minds again in midweek but should have more than enough quality to see off Paderborn regardless of any rotation.
Kovac is expected to make some changes given the club's hectic September schedule across three competitions, though the core of his attacking unit, including Guirassy, should remain intact after Tuesday's European win.
However, Konstantinos Karetsas, who went off injured in midweek, is set to join a long absentee list that includes Emre Can, Giannis Konstantelias, Filippo Mane and the suspended Samuele Inacio.
Although there is some good news as Kovac confirmed that Nico Schlotterbeck and Ramy Bensebaini are available to be part of the team again.
Paderborn, by contrast, are finding the step up to the Bundesliga difficult and are one of three sides yet to find the net in the division.
Ralf Kettemann's side opened the season with a 4-2 DFB-Pokal win over amateur outfit Phonix Lubeck before playing out a goalless draw with Mainz in their league opener, but they were then beaten 1-0 by Freiburg last time out courtesy of a first-half Maximilian Eggestein strike, leaving them still searching for their first Bundesliga win since returning to the top flight.
Given how poor they have been in front of the net, the visitors are not looking likely to end the seven-game winless streak against Dortmund (D2, L5), in which they have conceded 28 goals.
Sven Michel and Felix Gotze are part of a list of injured players that will miss this clash, with Sebastian Klaas, Nyamekye Awortwie-Grant, Lasse Eickel, and Timur Gayret also on the list.

Whispers predicts: Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Paderborn
Dortmund's overwhelming favourite status across every book referenced above makes the home win market at 1.27 (27/100) the obvious starting point, with the gulf in quality and current form heavily in the hosts' favour.
Dortmund to win to nil at 2.37 (11/8) also carries real weight given Paderborn's toothless recent form in front of goal, having failed to score in consecutive matches and managed just two goals in their last five outings across all competitions.
For value, a correct score of 3-0 to Dortmund at 9.60 (43/5) reflects the hosts’ form and Paderborn's poor start to the campaign.
> Match result — Dortmund win 1.27 (27/100) | Likelihood: Very Likely
> Dortmund to win to nil at 2.37 (11/8) | Likelihood: Probable
> Correct score — Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Paderborn at 9.60 (43/5) | Likelihood: Outsider
