Under 2.5 Goals

Three of Borussia Dortmund's last five matches have seen under 2.5 goals.

Friday night entertainment in the Bundesliga comes from Signal Iduna Park as Borussia Dortmund look to rubber-stamp a second-placed finish when they host a European-chasing Eintracht Frankfurt side.

Die Borussen have seen their form dip towards the end of the season, with the club losing three of their last four league outings.

The Eagles, on the other hand, are at serious risk of missing out on European football after dropping to eighth spot following an inconsistent run of results.

The last few weeks have not been kind to Borussia Dortmund fans, who not only watched their team fall to three defeats from four games, but also had to endure celebratory scenes from Gelsenkirchen as arch-rivals Schalke 04 secured promotion to the Bundesliga.

Before Niko Kovac and his men can begin planning for next season and the inevitable Revierderby, Dortmund still have the small matter of two games to get through.

Friday’s clash with Eintracht Frankfurt presents Dortmund with an opportunity to secure their first second-placed finish since 2022-23, and above all, it is a chance to thank their supporters for their loyalty during a frustrating campaign.

Despite several positives, the Black and Yellows failed to make a serious dent in any competition this season - including the DFB Pokal and the Champions League.

The real disappointment comes in the Bundesliga given that Dortmund find themselves a massive 16 points behind champions Bayern Munich, despite losing just five games this entire league season and boasting the best defence in the competition.

When it comes to injuries ahead of Friday’s game, Kovac will be without Karim Adeyemi, Ramy Bensebaini, Emre Can, Felix Nmecha and Niklas Sule.

Eintracht Frankfurt are also dealing with a couple of injuries, with Nnamdi Collins and Jens Grahl both out of action. Rasmus Kristensen, on the other hand, is suspended after being sent off against Hamburger SV last weekend.

That result extended Frankfurt’s winless run to three straight games, and it also saw the club bumped out of the top seven by Freiburg.

As things stand, seventh is the last spot in the table which guarantees European football next season, leaving the Eagles with just two games remaining to try and overtake the Breisgau Brazilians.

Despite the many positives of qualifying for continental football, the big story in Frankfurt concerns head coach Albert Riera, who is reportedly on the brink of losing his job.

The relationship between the Spaniard and his players is understood to have deteriorated, with ‘Sport Bild’ revealing that Riera’s departure is nothing short of a certainty.

The 44-year-old reportedly criticised club captain Robin Koch for a recent illness-related absence before having a go at Jonathan Burkardt’s fitness levels.

Elsewhere, there have been additional rifts with Arthur Theate and Can Uzun, while World Cup winner Mario Gotze has been completely frozen out.

Riera, who took over from Dino Toppmoller last February, made more enemies by allegedly saying he only listens to ten per cent of what his medical staff are recommending.

Ongoing troubles behind the scenes have not helped the club with results, given the Eagles have only managed one win from their last six outings.

Their defence has been particularly poor, with Eintracht shipping 11 goals during those six matches.
