Watford's pre-season campaign will get underway on Saturday, when they travel to take on non-league opponents Boreham Wood at Meadow Park.
After finishing 16th in the Championship, Watford must take pre-season seriously in order to push for the playoff spots next term, whereas Boreham Wood must use the pain of their failed promotion bid from the fifth tier as fuel in their pre-season campaign.

Boreham Wood have been fighting in England's National League for 10 of the last 11 seasons, and they are set to compete in the division for another campaign due to the club losing on penalties to Rochdale in May at Wembley.
The hosts had finished fourth in the fifth division in 2025-26 with 90 points, an impressive placement considering they had finished fifth in the sixth tier in 2024-25.
An area for the club to address this pre-season will be their defence considering they conceded 58 league goals in 46 regular season matches, a return that made them the sixth best defensive team in the top seven.
Defender Tylor Golden joined Boreham Wood earlier this month from Altrincham, and the 26-year-old will likely feature in the backline on Saturday.
Watford were last in the Premier League in 2021-22, and their 16th-placed finish in 2025-26 was their lowest placement since their demotion to the Championship, though their tally of 57 points was better than the 56 they accumulated in 2023-24.
The Hornets appointed Alessio Dionisi as boss in June, with the Italian having replaced Ed Still after less than three months in charge, and he is the club's 12th head coach – excluding interim managers – since the end of the 2020-21 season, as well as the 24th since the Pozzo family took over the club in 2012.
Watford faced Boreham Wood in a pre-season fixture prior to the start of 2025-26, winning 2-0, and they have in fact triumphed in three and drawn two of their five meetings with the hosts, though all five clashes were friendlies.
Hornets winger Nestory Irankunda exited the World Cup's round of 32 on July 3 after Australia lost on penalties to Egypt, so there is no reason to expect him to take part in pre-season yet.

Whispers predicts: Boreham Wood 0-2 Watford
It is notoriously difficult to accurately predict pre-season games due to variable squad makeup and fluctuating levels of fitness, but Watford should still be seen as favourites because of their status as a club in the second tier.
Given the visitors have kept three consecutive clean sheets against their opponents, it may be worthwhile to predict Watford to Keep a Clean Sheet.
However, Watford have failed to take the lead heading into the interval in any of their past eight games, so predicting a Draw at Half Time would be sensible.
If goals are scored in the game, they may come in the second half due to the fact four of the final seven goals Boreham Wood conceded in 2025-26 came after the interval, meaning backing Watford to Win the Second Half might be the right prediction.
