Key stats

  • Azerbaijan are currently on an 11-game winless streak across all competitions.
  • Five of Ukraine's last six games went above the 2.5-goal line.

Correct score prediction: Azerbaijan 1-2 Ukraine

To be fair, Ukraine have been going through a rough patch, losing three of their last four matches. However, they have fared better than their hosts, who are coming off a humiliating 5-0 defeat and have lost nine of their last 11 games.

Keeping in mind that Ukraine have no losses in two previous meetings between these sides, we are leaning toward the visitors for the win.

Interestingly, Azerbaijan failed to score in those meetings.

Azerbaijan preview: Hoping to halt their unwanted streak

Coming off a 5-0 defeat to Iceland in their FIFA World Cup qualifying opener, Azerbaijan will look to right their wrongs when they take on Ukraine on Tuesday evening.

Coach Fernando Santos, who took over the helm in June 2024, is yet to register a win for the Land of Fire outfit after 11 games, with his job now under immediate threat should he fail to beat the Ukrainians at home.

The hosts finished the game with Iceland without injury problems, which means Santos is not expected to put unfamiliar faces for this game, with Narim Akhundzade and Mahir Emreli likely to keep their spots up front.

Predicted lineup: Mahammadaliev (GK), Dashdamirov, Mustafazada, Badalov, Cafarquliyev, Ibrahimli, Makhmudov, Abdullazada, Huseynov, Emreli & Akhundzade.

Last five matches

  • Iceland 5-0 Azerbaijan
  • Azerbaijan 1-2 Hungary
  • Latvia 0-0 Azerbaijan
  • Azerbaijan 0-2 Belarus
  • Azerbaijan 0-3 Haiti

Ukraine preview: A clean bill of health

Ukraine will fancy their chances of claiming all three points as they travel to Baku to take on a weak Azerbaijan side in their second qualifying group game.

It is worth noting that Ukrainians do not have the luxury of cheering their team at home, with home games taking place in Poland. They lost their opener 2-0 to France last weekend, conceding on either side of the half to a far superior opponent.

Given their hosts’ recent struggles, Serhiy Lebrov’s men should have confidence on their side to get their qualifying campaign back on track here with a fully fit squad ready for this contest.

Predicted lineup: Trubin (GK), Konoplia, Zabarnyi, Matviyenko, Zinchenko, Yarmolyuk, Zubkov, Kalyuzhnyi, Sudakov, Hutsuliak & Dovbyk.

Last five matches

  • Ukraine 0-2 France
  • New Zealand 1-2 Ukraine
  • Canada 4-2 Ukraine
  • Belgium 3-0 Ukraine
  • Ukraine 3-1 Belgium
