AZ Alkmaar vs Twente prediction: The battle for fifth spot

Key facts:

  • AZ Alkmaar rank just 10th for home points this season.
  • The two sides have scored and conceded very similar numbers this season, with 30 and 32 for, and 17 and 20 against respectively.
  • Twente's Sem Steijn and Alkmaar's Troy Parrott are first and third in the scoring charts in the Eredivisie.

Correct score prediction: AZ Alkmaar 2-2 Twente

We've gone for a score-draw in this one. The two sides are clearly very well-matched, with near identical records.

Normally, home advantage might make the difference in such clashes, but with Alkmaar's poor home form, we think this'll be a stalemate.

Pre-game odds and win probability: On a knife-edge

HOME: 7/5  (2.40) – 41.7%
DRAW: 5/2 (3.50) – 28.6%
AWAY: 7/4 (2.75) – 36.4%

*Odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

The bookmakers' expected winner in this game is AZ Alkmaar, albeit by the narrowest of margins. Their odds of 7/5 work out to a 41.7% likelihood of victory.

Recent H2Hs: Twente on top

Although Alkmaar won the last meeting between the two sides back in May, Twente have had the better of this fixture in recent years, winning three and drawing one of the remaining four.

AZ Alkmaar preview: Grade A form

AZ Alkmaar have hit a rich vein of form as the nights have drawn in, and De Kaasboeren are now unbeaten in seven, and have won four Eredivisie matches in a row.

Most recent was a 3-1 KNVB Cup win over Groningen, but their victory over Ajax a fortnight ago will live particularly long in the memory.

Predicted lineup: Owusu-Oduro (GK), Maikuma, Indi, Penetra, de Wit, Koopmeiners, Buurmeester, Smit, Mijnans, van Bommel, Parrott

Twente preview: Star man Steijn

Twente come into this one two points ahead of their hosts, in large part thanks to the form of attacking midfielder Sem Steijn, who has arguably been the best player in the league this season.

One dreads to think where Twente would be without him.

Aside from a humiliating 6-1 defeat to PSV, Twente are unbeaten in eight, and we think they'll keep that form up in this one.

Predicted lineup: Unnerstall (GK), van Rooij, Lagerbielke, van Hoorenbeeck, Salah-Eddine, Regeer, Vlap, Rots, Steijn, van Wolfswinkel, Lammers

Sem Steijn leads the Eredivisie race for the golden boot – Photo by imago

Player to watch: Sem Steijn

As alluded to earlier, Steijn has lit up the Eredivisie this season. The 23-year-old advanced midfielder has scored 12 and assisted four this season, averaging a goal or assist 1.2 times per 90.

Steijn has scored in his last four games, and we back him to contribute in this one too.
