The hosts appeared set to end their winless run against their visitors last time out, only to concede a stoppage-time equaliser in Townsville.

A last-16 defeat to Norway marked Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990, with the five-time champions widely seen as one of the biggest underachievers at the tournament in North America.
After falling behind to Nestory Irakunda’s free-kick midway through the second half, Carlo Ancelotti’s side were facing back-to-back defeats for the first time since 2023 before Rayan rescued a point with a 95th-minute equaliser.
Nevertheless, it was an underwhelming display from the Selecao at Queensland Country Bank Stadium, and they will know that a similar performance on Tuesday could result in defeat, as Rayan’s late header denied Australia what would have been only their second-ever win over Brazil and first in 25 years.
Brazil have yet to hit top gear under Ancelotti, despite going unbeaten in eight of their last nine matches since a friendly defeat to France in March. Much of that inconsistency can be attributed to squad optimising, given the undeniable level of talent.
Barcelona winger Raphinha provided an assist last time out, extending his run to 11 consecutive matches with a direct goal contribution dating back to pre-season against Basel. The in-form forward is currently Brazil’s main attacking threat.
Australia began 2026 in impressive fashion, winning their opening two matches by a combined score of 6-1, a stark contrast to their end to 2025, when they lost three in a row.
However, Tony Popovic’s side have managed just one win in their last seven matches across all competitions, which came in a 2-0 victory over Turkey in June’s World Cup opener.
The Socceroos gave a good account of themselves last time out and could easily have come away with a win, giving them confidence ahead of Tuesday’s rematch with Brazil.
Irakunda’s wonderstrike was only Australia’s second goal in four matches, underlining the need for more attacking output if they are to return to winning ways.
Australia will already have one eye on the AFC Asian Cup in January and will hope to arrive in Saudi Arabia having gotten themselves back on track.
