After finishing in ninth position in the Bundesliga last season, Augsburg recorded their best finish in the German top flight in more than a decade.

The man responsible for guiding them to that finish, Manuel Baum, has since been rewarded with a permanent contract until the end of the 2027/28 season, after initially only being brought in on a temporary basis until the end of last season.

Baum will be looking to kick on and continue to help Augsburg punch above their weight in German football, and the team his side will go up against on Thursday are a good example to follow in that regard, considering they finished sixth in the Premier League last season.

One of the difficulties Baum is facing is the interest being shown in several members of his squad. On that point, defender Chrislain is unlikely to play any part here as he edges closer to a move to Crystal Palace.

As for Bournemouth, it is the dawn of a new era under Marco Rose, and if he can replicate even half the success enjoyed by Andoni Iraola on the south coast, then he will have done a good job.

The powers-that-be at Bournemouth will do well not to compare the two men, as a sixth-placed finish should be beyond the Cherries this season, but Rose's experience in European football could help them have a serious crack at the Europa League.

The (very) early signs are hugely positive. In his first game in charge, Rose guided Bournemouth to a 4-1 victory over St Pauli, a side who also competed in the Bundesliga last season.

The aim for Rose on Thursday will be to get a better look at his squad, so heavy rotation is expected throughout the 90 minutes. Tyler Adams and Rayan are back in training after their World Cup efforts, but Veljko Milosavljevic has been ruled out with an injury.

Whispers predicts: Augsburg 1-2 Bournemouth

Bournemouth were very impressive in their 4-1 victory over St Pauli, and although Augsburg are a step up in quality, they should still have enough to come out on top, particularly with Rayan returning.

Both teams have scored in eight of Augsburg's last nine matches, so BTTS is an excellent bet on Thursday.

Ben Gannon-Doak scored the opener in the 4-1 win over St Pauli, and looked like the sharpest player on the pitch throughout.
