Aston Villa head into this fixture looking to use the Champions League as a welcome distraction from their Premier League campaign.

A 2-2 draw with Brentford at the weekend extended their competitive unbeaten run to three matches, but the dropped points will have been frustrating for Emery as his side look to climb the domestic table.

Their European form has been considerably more encouraging, having scored three first-half goals in their 3-2 victory over Club Brugge, securing a winning start to the league phase.

The result continued a strong run in continental competition for a side that won the Europa League last season and reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2024-25.

Villa Park has been a particularly difficult venue for visiting European teams, having won their last 10 home European matches, while their overall record against Turkish opposition is also positive, winning all three such games.

They have won all three previous encounters with Fenerbahce, including a 1-0 away victory in last season's Europa League, and that history should provide confidence, although it does not guarantee another comfortable evening.

Amadou Onana remains a long-term absentee after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury, while Ian Maatsen is also sidelined with an ankle injury, and Modou Keba Cisse is working towards a return later in October.

Leon Goretzka has returned to training with the group, but Matteo Ruggeri is doubtful after suffering a muscle injury against Brentford.

Fenerbahce, meanwhile, have reasons to approach the game with optimism, having begun their Champions League league-phase campaign with a 1-1 draw against Roma and have recently improved their results in domestic competition.

Their consecutive clean sheets and heavy-scoring wins suggest that they are beginning to find a rhythm, even if the quality of their opposition must be considered when assessing that run.

The main concern for the visitors is their record in the Champions League proper, with the Yellow Canaries having failed to win any of their last eight matches in the competition, recording three draws and five defeats.

Their recent meetings with English clubs have also been difficult, winning only two of their last 11 encounters with Premier League opposition.

Amara Diouf has been listed as doubtful with a muscle injury, while Jayden Oosterwolde is unavailable with an Achilles tendon problem.

Mert Muldur has also missed the last three matches with a knee injury and is set to remain sidelined.

Whispers predicts: Aston Villa 2-1 Fenerbahce

Aston Villa are the bookies favourites at 1.73 (8/11) and that is good value given their solid home form in Europe and Fenerbahce’s continental struggles.

However, the visitors have also been in great scoring form and should find the net, making over 2.5 goals at 1.84 (5/6) our preferred betting selection.

A 2-1 Aston Villa victory is the predicted score and it is priced at 15/2 (8.50). Villa have the quality and home record to secure the points, but Fenerbahce's recent improvement could make a clean sheet difficult.
