The January transfer window has definitively closed and Arsenal fans can rest relatively easy, at least regarding the current squad. The Gunners have just secured a crushing 4-0 victory over Leeds United and are enjoying a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League over Manchester City. With 14 matches remaining, the title is within reach.
Although in the final hours of the transfer deadline, a report from Florian Plettenberg emerged suggesting Arsenal were trying to land Newcastle star Sandro Tonali at the last minute, no deadline day signing ultimately materialised. However, reports from Spain are now causing much greater commotion, attempting to disrupt the idyll in north London.
Odegaard's relationship with Arteta reportedly at freezing point
Spanish outlet Fichajes, known for not being afraid to release very bold speculation, has claimed that captain Martin Odegaard is unhappy at the club. The reason is said to be Mikel Arteta's tactical decisions, which have allegedly led to a breakdown in relations between the manager and his key player.

The Norwegian midfielder reportedly does not feel comfortable with the direction the team is taking. Fichajes claim Arsenal are beginning to consider the possibility that a summer sale of the 27-year-old leader could be a solution for all parties. The price? Around £70m.
If there were any truth to these rumours, suitors would not wait long. First in line is Bayern Munich, who see Odegaard as an ideal leader and would be willing to pay the asking price.
Real Madrid, from where the Norwegian joined Arsenal, are also being drawn into the conversation. Los Blancos are still monitoring him, although a return would be complicated. Real have a packed midfield and would have to carefully consider the economic and sporting aspects of such a transfer. To put it more accurately, Real would desperately need a central midfielder, but they would be looking for more of a brain and engine for the team, not an attacking playmaker like Odegaard.
Turkish wonderkid could be the key
Arda Guler adds an interesting twist to the story. The 20-year-old Real Madrid talent is reportedly a big favourite of Mikel Arteta, who is completely enchanted by him. Although there is no talk of a direct swap, Arsenal's interest in Guler, valued at £80m, could open the door to negotiations between the two clubs in the summer.
For now, however, Martin Odegaard remains at the Emirates Stadium. The transfer window is closed and the captain's only goal is to lead Arsenal to the desired title. Whether the Fichajes reports are just media smoke or a sign of a summer earthquake remains to be seen. As I mentioned, Fichajes often speculate. The fact is, however, that they occasionally come out first with a bombshell that later proves to be true.
