When it comes to goalkeepers, few nations in the world can boast the kind of depth that Italy has produced, the peninsula delivering some of the finest stoppers the game has ever seen.
Even from the early days of football, the Azzurri could always rely on some iconic names to stand between the posts and save the day, and that tradition has carried into the modern age.
The most famous Italian teams have always boasted a top class goalkeeper, from Il Grande Torino to the powerful Milan teams that dominated the early 1990s, with the national team benefitting hugely from this seemingly endless production line of talent.
Here at Football Whispers, we decided to list Italy’s top five goalkeepers in history, a difficult task that prompted much debate and more than a few late-night arguments over who would make the final cut.
To gain inclusion into the list, silverware is essential, but tangible success is not enough as other factors such as longevity, legacy and overall approach were also considered.
Without further waiting, here are the five best Italian goalkeepers of all time. Did we miss anyone, who else should make this list, but who would miss out?
Let us know.
