Sports betting is legal in Canada and has been since 1985, when the Canadian government made amendments to laws surrounding video gambling and slot machines. However, back then, Canadians in all provinces and territories could only wager on parlays, primarily with provincial lottery corporations, i.e. OLG or ALC.
The industry transformed dramatically in recent years. With a wave of momentum from single-game sports betting being legalized in the US in 2018, the Canadian government followed suit in 2021, clearing the way for provinces to open their only legal sports betting markets, with single-game betting, via Bill C-218, or the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act.

Others, like Bet365 and Sports Interaction, are also registered partners with the AGCO and iGaming Ontario, but have separate offshore licenses that allow them to offer their services to players in Canadian provinces and territories with unregulated betting markets.
Thus, is Betano legal in Alberta? The answer is no, but it is the province closest to opening up an official regulated sports betting market. There is no official launch date, but the province all but confirmed it will have Canada's second regulated betting market – Alberta's Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Dale Nally said the province was developing a framework for regulations at the Canadian Gaming Summit in June.
Moreover, several online gaming companies, including Penn Entertainment, have indicated they are waiting on Ontario opening up its market. Penn CEO Jay Snowden spoke very highly of the opportunity for theScore Bet, purchased for $2 billion in 2021, in Alberta: “It's not just a Toronto or Ontario thing. So given the success we've had in Ontario, and given that Alberta will have very similar tax rates as we understand it, and be both OSB and iCasino, we think it's going to be a really important North American market for us, probably a top three or four market for us.”
This could open the door for other operators, like Betano, to expand their presence in Canada by becoming a licensed operator in Alberta.

Betano Sportsbook Retail Locations
Betano does have retail locations in other markets, but there are none in Ontario. There are only five retail betting locations in Ontario and four of these are Great Canadian Sportsbook-owned properties – Elements Casino Brantford, Great Blue Heron Casino and Hotel, Shorelines Casino Belleville, and Pickering Casino Resort.
