High-Flying USWNT Lock Horns with Portugal
The 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup winners United States will give Portugal a run for their money on the 1st of August. At least that’s what is expected of Alex Morgan and her teammates. Let’s see if the Portuguese ladies have something else in mind.

USA vs Portugal Expectations
- Winning the World Cup back-to-back is what makes you favorite against anyone. The US side has the three points up for grabs.
- We believe we’ll see a clean sheet for the USWNT, as Portugal don’t strike us as a team capable of scoring against the top teams.
- Portugal will be on the defense, feeling the game out and waiting for their time to strike. This is a reason for us to believe we’ll probably see very few goals at Eden Park on Tuesday.

USA odds: -344 – 76.0%
Draw odds: +430 – 17.0%
Portugal odds: +1100 – 7.0%
With a measly 7.0% win probability ahead of Tuesday’s brawl, we just can’t see Portugal winning this one. The USWNT has a whopping 76.0% shot at the three points and the team is rightfully considered the expected winners ahead of this match at -344. As we mentioned earlier, we might see very few goals at Eden Park. That’s why Under 2.5 Goals has a likelihood of 51.36% at -105, while Under 0.5 Portugal Goals has a 35.71%.
USA vs Portugal Lineups & Team News
USA
The good news for the US side is that goalkeeper Naeher conceded only one goal in the World Cup tournament thus far. The bad news is that there’s still a tiny chance the US won’t make it to the round of 16. This involves a Portugal win on Tuesday, which is a far-fetched scenario. The USWNT should pick up these three points, advance to the next stage of the campaign, and even make it to the quarter-finals.
Predicted lineup – Naeher (GK), Fox, Ertz, Girma, Dunn, DeMelo, Sullivan, Horan, Rodman, Morgan & Smith
Portugal
The Portuguese side was simply ruthless against Vietnam last week. The match at FMG Stadium Waikato ended only 2-0 in favor of the European side, but Silva and her teammates hammered away 29 shots at target. The result could’ve easily been different on another day, but we doubt the Portuguese team will have as many opportunities against the US.
Predicted lineup – Morais (GK), Borges, Costa, Seica, Alves, Jacinto, Pinto, Marchao, Nazareth, Silva & Encarnacao
Player to Watch: Sophia Smith
22-year-old Sophia Smith is proving to be a key player for the USWNT side in the World Cup this year. The Portland Thorns FC striker put Alex Morgan to shame last week, as she bagged a lovely brace for her country.
At the end of the game, the result on the scoreboard was only 3-0 in favor of USA, so perhaps without Sophia among the starters, Morgan and her teammates might have had a completely different game ahead of them. We believe Sophia Smith is the one to watch on Tuesday, as she’s a candidate for the Golden Boot award.
