Nobody can argue that the USWNT has dominated their opponents left and right for the last decade or two. It comes as no surprise that there are so many USWNT players playing abroad in recent years.
In this article, you will see a list of the top 5 USWNT players abroad, how they got there, how they performed in recent years, as well as an evaluation of how the US soccer has been developing throughout the last few years.
Top 5 best USWNT players abroad
Lindsey Horan
30-year-old Horan is topping the list, as she is without a doubt one of the US’ finest, with over 150 appearances for the USWNT.
Horan’s transfer to Lyon is actually her second stay abroad. From 2012 to 2016, she played for French giants PSG. During her stay in Paris, Horan made 58 appearances and scored 46 goals.
Today, she is playing for PSG’s fierce rivals Lyon. She signed her contract in 2023, after a brief season-long loan with the club starting in 2022. Since she joined Lyon, Horan made 56 appearances, scoring on 14 occasions.
Emily Fox
Of course, our list of the top 5 best USWNT players abroad could not be complete without Fox. With 56 appearances for the USWNT, she is one of the key players on the team. Coach Emma Hayes trusts her to guard the right-back position and so does Arsenal.
Fox signed for the Gunners just a few months ago, but she already has six appearances for her new club. Sure, she still has yet to score a debut goal for her team, but we are convinced that with her signature runs down the right, she will eventually do that as well.
Previously, she played for North Carolina Courage, but the Gunners saw her undeniable class and decided to move quickly.
Kristie Mewis
The 33-year-old veteran is currently playing for Premier League’s West Ham. Throughout her lengthy career, Mewis has played for plenty of teams. The West Ham adventure isn’t even her EU rodeo, as during the 2015/16 season she was on loan with Bavarian giants Bayern Munich.
She headed towards East London after she and Gotham FC mutually agreed to part ways on Dec. 22nd.
Mewis made only three appearances for her new club, but we are convinced that sooner or later, she will make a breakthrough into the starting lineup, as she is undoubtedly one of the top 5 USWNT players abroad.
Korbin Albert
We’d like to give Albert a shoutout as well, seeing as she is playing for one of the best teams in Europe right now. PSG were clever enough to poach her away from Cleaveland Ambassadors in 2023 and now, she is playing at her lethal best for the club from Paris.
Despite her young age, Albert managed to make a total of 24 appearances for her new club. She even scored her debut goal for her manager. Albert has the potential to win the Golden Ball one day and we are convinced she deserves a place among the top 5 USWNT players abroad.
Mia Fishel
Despite only making three official appearances for the USWNT, Fishel also deserves to be mentioned here. After 48 appearances and 38 goals for Tigres UANL, Fishel opted it’s time for a new chapter in her professional career.
And what a year 2023 has been for her! Her talents were appreciated by Chelsea, as the Blues from London paid the Liga MX side $250k for her services. Fishel already made 10 appearances and even scored a goal for her new club.
