New Jersey
Governor Phil Murphy signed the contentious sports betting bill. A William Hill sportsbook took the first wagers on June 14, 2018, at 10.30 a.m. Surprisingly, Murphy was the first individual to place a bet on the site. Borgata accepted its first sports bets 30 minutes later.

Arizona
Arizona legalized sports betting in September 2021, just in time for the start of the NFL season. Both in-person and online betting is available to AZ residents and visitors. Today, Arizona is home to over a dozen sportsbook apps.

Colorado
Colorado legalized sports betting in May 2020. According to Colorado laws, a retail casino can apply for a license to run online and physical sportsbooks. To date, 26 of the 33 retail casinos in CO have taken advantage of their eligibility.

West Virginia
In August 2018, West Virginia became the 5th State to accept legal sports betting online when the Hollywood Casino – a bookie managed by Penn National, opened its doors to the residents. The move came a few months after the WV legislature approved a new bill, with the Lottery Commission serving as the chief regulator

Michigan
Legal sports betting online in MI started on March 2022, with 2 Detroit-area casinos going live on the same day. The move materialized less than three months after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer approved the "Lawful Sports Betting Act."

Indiana
Indiana joined the states with online sports betting in 2019. Over a dozen retail establishments and apps are currently available to visitors and residents of Hoosier State.

Nevada
No longer the only American State that allows legal sports betting, NV is an established market that has been active since 1949. Given its lengthy history in successfully providing sports betting, many states look to Nevada for best practices.
Virginia
Following Virginia's approval of legal sports betting in April 2020, sports bettors began placing legal wagers in January 2021. Online betting is permissible but is not allowed for some youth sports or Virginia-based college sports.

Wyoming
On April 5, 2021, Gov. Mark Gordon authorized sports wagering solely through mobile devices. The new law permitted statewide mobile sports betting without any partnership with a physical casino.
Arkansas
Arkansas legalized sports betting in 2019. However, legal online sports betting started in March 2022. Today, there are several online sportsbooks are available in the Natural State.
Delaware
DE became the first American State outside Nevada to permit sports betting when it booked its first wager in 2018. At the time of writing, three retail sportsbooks were active in the State. Unfortunately, though the law permits, Delaware has no online sportsbook.
New Hampshire
The betting sphere in the State is regulated by the New Hampshire Lottery. So far, the Lottery has only allowed one bookmaker – DraftKings - to legally operate in the State. In addition, there are retail locations in Manchester, Seabrook, and Dover.
New York
Legal online sports betting launched in NY in January 2022. Since then, New York has quickly become a major sports betting jurisdiction in the US. In the first month New York residents had access to online sports betting, they placed bets worth over $2 billion. Currently, the State only permits nine online sportsbooks.

Iowa
Iowa is one of the legal online sports betting states in the US. The first bets were accepted in August 2019. Both online and retail sports are legal; however, online activity was delayed for some time because of the in-person registration requirement. Since the requirement has been abolished, multiple sportsbook apps accept bets in the State.

Connecticut
The State of Connecticut welcomed its first sportsbook in September 2021. The two main tribal casinos in the State, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, also provide in-person sports wagering. The available online sportsbooks have teamed up with the tribes and State Lottery.
Pennsylvania
PA has been accepting sports betting since 2018. The first physical sportsbook launched in November of that year. On the other hand, online sportsbooks went live in the State in May 2019. Presently, there are over a dozen online and in-person sportsbooks in the Keystone State.

Illinois
IL joined the sports betting sphere in March 2020. Both online and retail sports betting is allowed in the Prairie State, but the legislation initially called for an in-person registration that limited the sportsbooks' expansion. However, this registration expired in March 2022; therefore, nothing prevents bettors from registering anywhere in Illinois.

Kansas
Governor Laura Kelly of Kansas approved the sports betting bill in May 2022. The law became effective in July 2022 and permitted retail and online sports betting. Regulators are working tirelessly to see the sports betting industry catch up with other states.
Louisiana
The first official sports bet in LA took place in October 2021. However, legal online sports betting went live in the State in February 2022. Today, more than six apps are currently operating in LA, and the number is expected to rise over time.

Rhode Island
Rhode Island has accepted legal sports betting since 2018 when physical sportsbooks launched at its two commercial casinos. Caesars (originally William Hill) is the only online and retail sportsbook in the State.
Oregon
Sports betting is available in OR in both online and retail formats. Currently, DraftKings is the official sportsbook of the Oregon Lottery. The company took over as the sole online option in the State in January 2022. Retail sportsbooks are available at two casinos –Sports Wagering Lounge (Chinook Winds Casino Resort) and BetMGM (Spirit Mountain Casino).
Washington
Washington allowed sports betting in March 2020 and accepted its first wager in September 2021. Only specified tribal casinos can accept bets. Mobile sports betting is only permissible if it takes place within a casino establishment.
Ohio
In December 2021, HB 29 (an Ohio sports betting bill) was approved by both chambers of the state legislature and signed into law by Governor Mike DeWine on December 22. In theory, then, sports betting is allowed in Ohio. The sports betting market in Ohio, however, opened at 12:01 a.m. on January 1, 2023, and this is the case for both online and brick-and-mortar establishments.

Maryland
When Governor Larry Hogan signed House Bill 940 into law on May 18, 2021, it effectively legalized Maryland sports betting. By Thanksgiving 2022, residents received access to Maryland online sports betting on their mobile phones. The 23rd of November was a big day for the licensed sportsbook apps as Maryland opened its door to them.
Massachusetts
Massachusetts residents, along with die hard sports betting fans were beyond ecstatic when retail sports betting became legalized on January 31, 2023. Also, as of March 10, 2023, online sports betting also officially became legal.
