Athletic Bilbao is a famous football club based in Bilbao, Spain, often called “the Lions.” The club has eight La Liga titles and twenty-three Copa del Rey titles, but all of them before 1990. The club's most recent honor is the Supercopa de España, which they won against Barcelona in 2015. Their current coach is Gaizka Garitano used to be the B-team coach before he was appointed head coach after Eduardo Berizzo was dismissed because of the low win rate. Surprisingly, the team's results increased, and after the first five games of the 2019-2020 season, Athletic Bilbao was at the top of the League table, but unfortunately, they couldn't maintain their form for long. Completing transfers is the way to improve in the world of football and Bilbao has had its fair share of buying and selling players.

Notable Transfers to and from Athletic Bilbao

Over the years, the team hasn't spent much on transfers, but they have managed to get a few good deals. Below, you can see all the notable transfers in the history of the club.

Ander Herrera was on the team from 2011 to 2014, and the notable thing about his transfer away to Manchester United was the fee Athletic Bilbao got for him – £36 million. When he played his final season for “the Lions,” they qualified for the Champions League for the first time in sixteen years.

Martinez spends his football career in two professional clubs, and one of them was Athletic Bilbao. He joined in 2018 for the record sum (for the team) of £32 million. Before that, the Lions hadn't spent so much money on any single player. His contract will end in 2023 until that happens; we hope to see him score more than one goal for the club, which resulted in a win against Real Betis in the 2019/2020 season.

Fernando Llorente is considered by many to be one of the best Athletic Bilbao players in history. He played for the team from junior years until his transfer to Juventus, which surprisingly was a free transfer. During his time in Athletic Bilbao and the reserve team, he scored a total of eighty-nine goals.

Javi Martinez is one of the most notable names in the history of the Lions. He played for the club for six seasons and scored twenty-two goals from his position as a center back. Like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, and Manchester United, many teams have wanted him, although he has only played for three major teams in his career. Bayern Munich bought him from Athletic Bilbao for the fee of £40 million.

Aymeric Laporte is a good center-back and who played for Athletic Bilbao for six seasons. He scored a total of seven goals, but he made over a hundred and sixty appearances. He was a significant part of the team and, in 2016, renewed his contract until 2020. His move to Manchester City was for the buyout price of £65 million.
