Wesley Fofana is a French professional footballer of Malian descent. He was born on December 17th, 2000 in Marseille and he plays as a central defender for Leicester City. Fofana is widely considered to be one of the best young defenders in the world.
The young Frenchmen started his career at Repos Vitrolles when he was only eight years old. However, he changed a few different clubs during his youth career before he finally settled at Saint Etienne in 2015. He spent another three years at the youth academy there before being moved to the senior team in 2018.
His first season Fofana mostly spent in the team’s affiliate Saint Etienne II, gaining experience in the lower French leagues. He made his debut for Saint Etienne in 2019 in a match against Nice. In his second full season, Fofana started to receive some playing time. He appeared in 14 league games for the club and even managed to score a goal.
Fofana started the 2020-2021 season with Saint-Etienne but he only played in four games before he was sold to the Premier League team Leicester City. Due to injury problems at his new club, the defender was able to hit the ground running straight away and he quickly became an important part of the first team, playing in both Premier League and Europa League for Leicester.
The youngster only played in two games for the Under-20 French national team in his career and since he still hasn’t made his debut for the senior team, there is an option to play for Mali as well. However, he will most likely choose France and become an integral part of the French national team in the future.
Wesley Fofana Transfers and Rumours
- 2015: Bel Air to Saint Etienne – Free Transfer
- 2020: Saint Etienne to Leicester City – £30 million
Fofana came into the centre of attention in France when he was a teenager after moving to Saint Etienne. However, he wasn’t really considered a word-class talent when he was a kid but he managed to develop his game and improve on his natural strengths, such as heading, passing and tackling.
During his time at Saint Etienne, he didn’t get to play much. In his two season with the senior team, he only appeared in 20 league matches. Still, this was enough for the Leicester City scouts to notice him and make him their primary transfer target in the summer of 2020.
After a long saga full of rumours, gossip and false transfer news, the two clubs finally managed to agree on a transfer fee. In the end, Leicester City paid around £30 million for Fofana, which is the biggest fee that Saint Etienne received in their history.
The level of faith that Leicester showed by paying such a huge amount for an unproven teenager is very high, so it’s fully expected for Fofana to remain at the King Power Stadium for some time. However, when the time comes for him to move, Leicester will certainly make a hefty profit – judging by the start of Fofana’s career at the club and the other records sales Leicester made in the past few years.
