Thiago Emiliano da Silva, or popularly known as Thiago Silva, is a Brazilian footballer. A central defender by trade, Silva was born on September 22, 1984. Silva began his career with Fluminense even when he was in school. However, the defender would be a professional with RS Futebol, who are a club based in the southern part of Brazil. After strong performances, RS Futebol began receiving gossip about an impending move, which came about in 2004 to Juventude.
Juventude were able to provide Thiago Silva with an opportunity to move to a European club in less than a year, as he made the switch to FC Porto’s reserve team in 2005. After being played in the first team back in Brazil, Silva found it difficult to cope playing with the reserves with the Portuguese outfit. He was loaned out – in line with the transfer rumours – to Dynamo Moscow, but a tuberculosis infection almost brought an end to his career. A return to Fluminense in 2006 was aimed at the starting his career again.
The second spell of his career proved to be more successful, as Silva was immediately in the transfer news section about a return to Europe. Legendary club AC Milan came calling for his services in 2009 after making Silva as one of their top transfer targets. Even though Silva was a Brazilian international by then – after making his debut in 2008, the switch to the San Siro put him on the world map. After winning the Italian Serie A and Supercoppa Italiana, the transfer odds were shortened for Silva’s move to PSG.
His eight years with PSG would be the most successful of his career, as he ended up picking up seven league titles and finished as the runner-up in the Champions League once.
Silva might not be the tallest centre backs around and he is also not the quickest. Yet, the Brazilian is one of the consistent players on the pitch. His ability to read the game is exceptional, while his leap is also tremendous to make up for his lack of height advantage.
Apart from his numerous achievements at the club level, Silva has also starred for the national team in several competitions. He is close to making 100 appearances for Brazil and he has won the Copa America in 2019.
