Sergino Gianni Dest is a professional American football player. He was born on November 3rd, 2000 in Almere, Netherlands. His father is American and his mother is Dutch, so Dest could choose which country to represent. He chose the USA.
The young right-back started his professional career with the local club Almere before he moved to Ajax when he was only 12 years old. Going through the club’s famous youth academy is a big deal for any player and Dest made the most of it – especially since he started out his career as a forward. During his time in the Ajax academy, he was moved back to his now preferred position of right back.
After six years in the youth ranks, he was moved to the senior team in 2018 but he didn’t play for Ajax until next year. Instead, he was sent to the club’s affiliate Jong Ajax to gain first-team experience. Finally, he made his debut for the Ajax senior team in 2019 in the Dutch Supercup match against PSV Eindhoven.
Dest only played one full season with the Ajax senior team before he was bought by Barcelona. So far, his start with the club has been pretty impressive since he already appeared in 11 games this season and he seems to be a standard piece of Ronald Koeman’s team.
As we already mentioned, Dest represents the USA on the international level. He made his debut for the national team in 2019 and has so far appeared in 6 games for the senior team. Dest also played for the USA youth teams and appeared in multiple World Cups with the U17 and U20 squads.
Sergino Dest Transfers and Rumours
- 2012: Almere City to Ajax– Free Transfer
- 2020: Ajax to Barcelona – £19 million
It is safe to say that Dest was on a good career trajectory as soon as he joined the Ajax youth academy since many great players before him have gone the same way. And while his talent was obvious from an early age, the switch from the forward position to right-back made Dest stand out more among his peers.
His career in the senior team at Ajax didn’t last long. Thanks to his talent and potential, he became a target for some of the biggest clubs in Europe. According to football gossip, Bayern Munich was very interested in signing the right-back, in addition to a few other clubs.
However, Barcelona won the race for his services and cashed out a £19 million transfer fee to bring Sergino to Camp Nou. The current manager of Barcelona is a big fan of Dest. In fact, Koeman tried to convince him to play for the Netherlands national team but his young protégé wanted to represent the USA.
Since Dest is still a new face in Barcelona, it is hard to believe that he will be going anywhere soon. It is highly unlikely that he will make transfer news again in the near future, especially since his career at Camp Nou seems to be going pretty well.
