Raphaël Varane is a French international defender who plays as a centre back. Born on 25 April 1993, Varane began his career at a local club in the city of Lille, where he was born. After playing for a couple of years at AS Hellemmes, Varane would move on to Lens, as seen by various football whispers. The switch to a bigger club could have had a negative impact on his progress, but Varane was able to make a positive impact right from the day he joined Lens.
Varane was quickly moving up the ranks at Lens, where he played alongside talented names like Thorgan Hazard. Amidst a lot of transfer rumours, Lens decided to give him a professional contract at the start of the 2010-11 campaign. Apart from putting an end to all the gossip columns, this contract provided a stable base for Varane. In his first full season with Lens, the defender ended up making 23 appearances and even scored two goals.
A number of top European clubs like Real Madrid were starting to put Varane on the list of their transfer targets, as a direct result of his versatile campaign with Lens. Apart from featuring as a centre back, Varane also played a role as a defensive midfielder in some matches.
In his first season with Madrid, Varane ended up picking the league title and Supercopa de Espana. The following campaigns would turn out to be a lot more successful with Varane playing a crucial role in the defence alongside Sergio Ramos. Varane started becoming a regular for Madrid from the 2014-15 campaign onwards. He has already picked up three league titles, one Copa del Rey medal, four Champions League titles, three FIFA Club World Cup medals, and three UEFA Super Cup trophies.
As a direct result of playing for Madrid, Varane started getting more exposure for the national team. After making his debut for France in 2013, Varane reached the ultimate honour of winning the World Cup with the French team in 2018. The defender has also picked up numerous individual accolades including Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 2018. Varane was also nominated for the Champions League squad of the campaign for 2017-18.
