Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, or simply Neymar, is a professional football player from Brazil. He was born on February 5th, 1992 in Mogi das Cruzes and he is widely considered to be one of the best players in the world.
The forward began his career at Portuguesa Santista but he was quickly spotted by Santos scouts and brought to their youth academy. He made his professional debut in 2009 when he was only 17 years old and he was pretty standard in the first team since he made 48 appearances in his first season. Neymar spent four years with Santos senior team and scored 107 league goals in 177 appearances. He also won three domestic titles, one domestic cup and Copa Libertadores.
After proving himself in his home country, it was time for Neymar to move to Europe. He made transfer news when he signed for Barcelona to create the infamous attacking trio along with Messi and Suarez. The Brazilian spent four years at Barcelona and won two La Liga titles, three Spanish Cups and one Champions League.
In 2017, Neymar rocked the football world when he moved to Paris Saint-Germain. The striker is still in Paris and so far he had a successful career with PSG, winning three League 1 titles and two French Cups. However, the Champions League trophy is still missing but Neymar did reach the final of the competition with the club in 2020.
On the international stage, Neymar wasn’t as successful since his only trophy with Brazil is 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. That being said, he is the second-best scorer for Brazil with 64 goals, only behind Pele. Neymar made his debut for the national team in 2010, at just 18 years of age. He represented his country at two World Cups and two Copa Americas.
Neymar also has an impressive list of individual awards and accomplishments, including being named into Champions League Squad of the Season on two occasions, being crowned as Copa Libertadores MVP and many others.
Neymar Transfers and Rumours
- 2003: Portuguesa Santista to Santos – Free Transfer
- 2013: Santos to Barcelona – £72 million
- 2017: Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain – £200 million
Ever since he made his debut for Santos, Neymar has been the focal point of many transfer rumours. This gossip was understandable since he was widely considered as the most talented youngster in the world at the time and many big European clubs made Neymar one of their primary transfer targets.
In 2013, these football whispers came to fruition when Neymar signed for Barcelona for an undisclosed fee. However, a later investigation into the transfer revealed that Neymar ended up costing the Spanish club around £72 million. Neymar spent four successful years at Barcelona and it seemed logical that he will remain with the club for a long time.
This turned out to be a delusion since Neymar moved to Paris Saint-Germain after a controversial transfer went through. The situation was controversial because Neymar’s representatives paid his release clause worth around £200 million for PSG, in an attempt to circumvent the Financial Fair Play rules. The manoeuvre worked and Neymar moved to Paris in what is the most expensive transfer in football history.
