Memphis Depay is a Dutch footballer who is capable of playing as an attacking midfielder or as a forward. Born on 13 February 1994 in Netherlands, Depay started his career with local club vv Moordrecht. He was picked up by Sparta Rotterdam before eventually impressing the scouts at PSV Eindhoven. Many football whispers predicted the likelihood of Depay being snapped up by a big club in Dutch football and this turned out to be true when he moved to PSV Eindhoven on a trial in 2011.
Soon, Depay found himself playing for the PSV first-team with his debut coming in a KNVB Cup game. After having successfully overcome transfer odds to sign the youngster, PSV were keen on retaining him on a big professional contract, which was signed in 2012. If the first season was just a sign of things to come, the 2013-14 campaign turned out to be the breakthrough season for Depay, who assisted PSV in getting positive results in Europe apart from domestic football.
This season started transfer rumours surrounding his future. It was aptly justified by the 2014-15 campaign when many gossip columns had already started linking Depay with a move to big clubs across Europe. His performances at the 2014 World Cup justified the transfer news. Apart from featuring in an exemplary fashion for PSV with 22 goals in 30 games, Depay was also turning out to be a regular for the Dutch national team since his debut in 2013.
The summer of 2015 brought about the much-anticipated big move with Manchester United being £30 million for his services. Depay was expected to progress further under United’s Dutch boss Louis van Gaal, but the forward continued to struggle along with the club for form and consistency. After just two goals in 33 appearances across two campaigns, Depay was transferred to French outfit Lyon in a £14 million deal in 2017.
Even though Depay has not won major honours with Lyon, he has already made a strong impression with 48 goals in 113 appearances for the team. His best season with Lyon came immediately after his big-money move, as he scored 19 goals in 36 games in the 2017-18 season.
