Marco Reus is a German footballer who plays as a winger or centre forward for his club and international team. Born on 31 May 1989, Reus began his youth days by representing Borussia Dortmund for 10 years from 1996. His inability to break through into the first-team lead to football whispers about a move away from Dortmund. This indeed happened in 2006 when he joined Rot Weiss Ahlen, who largely utilised him as an attacking midfielder.
Rot Weiss Ahlen would go on to provide Marco Reus with his opportunity to make a professional career. The striker made his debut for Rot Weiss Ahlen II in the Oberliga Westfalen. After two seasons of playing in the second division, Reus was influential in seeing to the club’s first team getting promotion from Regionalliga Nord to the 2. Bundesliga. His final season with Rot Weiss Ahlen produced four goals in 27 games, but that did not prevent transfer rumours from building up.
Borussia Mönchengladbach signed the young forward for just under £1 million in 2009. His first season at Borussia-Park produced a decent return of eight goals in 33 games, but the best was yet to come. In the subsequent two campaigns, Reus flourished in front of goal with 28 goals in 64 matches. This led to transfer odds for a move away from Mönchengladbach being slashed by bookmakers.
Reus’ former outfit Borussia Dortmund entered into the transfer news picture as a contender for his services. The club activated his buyout clause of close to £15 million in 2012 and brought him back to the Signal Iduna Park. His first season back in Dortmund proved to be a success with 14 goals in 32 matches and the team almost captured the league title. In the following season, however, Reus would play an even greater role in making sure that Dortmund managed to beat all odds and pick up back-to-back DFL-Supercup titles. Reus came up with 16 goals in 30 games during the 2013-14 season.
His best campaign with Dortmund would be the 2018-19 season when he scored 17 goals in 27 games. Apart from helping Dortmund reign supreme in the domestic cup competitions, Reus also made sure that the club came within a whisker of winning the Champions League in the 2012-13 season.
Reus had previously picked up only the Regionalliga Nord title in his career before joining Dortmund. Since then, he has added the DFL-Supercup and DFB Pokal on multiple occasions. Reus also made his debut for Germany in 2011.
