Marc-Andre ter Stegen is a professional German goalkeeper who plays for Barcelona. He was born on April 30th, 1992 in Monchengladbach and is widely regarded as one of the world’s best goalkeepers. Ter Stegen started his football career at Borussia Monchengladbach when he was only 4 years old.
He spent his entire youth career at Borussia and finally earned his debut for the first team in 2010. However, he was still playing occasionally and spent most of his time in the club’s affiliate team in the lower leagues.
Ter Stegen made his breakthrough in 2011 and has been the team’s first choice in front of the goal ever since. His consistent performances and undeniable talent made him very popular with other clubs who soon became interested in his services.
The keeper made transfer news when he was sold to Barcelona in 2014. It was the perfect time for him to join the Spanish giants since there was an empty spot after departures of two goalkeepers, Valdes and Pinto.
However, his first couple of seasons at the club were not as successful as he expected. Ter Stegen got injured before the start of his first season at the club, which forced Barcelona to start Claudio Bravo instead. Bravo performed well, so he and ter Stegen rotated most of the time until 2016 when the German keeper finally become the undeniable first choice in the goal.
Ter Stegen is still at Barcelona and during his time at the club he managed to four La Liga titles and four Copa del Rey titles, as well as lift the Champions League trophy in 2015. He was also selected in the Champions League Squad of the Year on two occasions and was the runner-up for the inaugural Yashin Trophy in 2019.
Ter Stegen made his debut for the German national team in 2012. However, he only made 24 appearances for the team so far due to the great competition for the goalkeeper spot – his competitor through his career was one of the best goalkeepers of the past decade, Manuel Neuer.
