Leroy Sane is a German footballer who is adept at playing in a number of positions across the attack. Born on 11 January 1996, Sane choose to play for SG Wattenscheid 09 in 2001. However, he was soon spotted – as seen by football whispers – by the Schalke academy after three years. After playing for Schalke for three years, Sane made the switch to the youth setup at Bayer Leverkusen before coming back to Schalke in 2011.
Sane had immense potential even as a very young player and Schalke decided to give him a three-year contract once he turned professional in 2014. Sane also made his debut for Schalke soon after signing this new contract. The 2014-15 campaign is regarded as a breakthrough for the winger, who featured in 13 appearances throughout the campaign. His performances from the season were enough to catch the eye of top clubs, according to the transfer rumours at the time. Yet, Schalke were able to get excellent performances out of Sane even with a lot of gossip columns.
The German national team called up Sane for his debut in 2015. The growing interest surrounding Sane eventually led to a concrete offer from Manchester City in the summer of 2016. The move to the Premier League was not the only factor that appealed to Sane, as the move would also allow him to play for Pep Guardiola. His debut for City was against local rivals Manchester United.
In his first season, Sane was clearly focusing on getting to know the league and he came up with five goals in 26 matches. The next two seasons brought about the best in Sane, who came up with 10 goals in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 campaigns. These goals were instrumental in helping City win the league title, while they also did a treble during the 2018-19 campaign by winning the FA Cup and EFL Cup.
Despite the strong contributions, Sane started the 2019-20 campaign with injury problems and lack of regular gametime. The transfer odds for a return to Germany were slashed when rumours about a rift between Guardiola and Sane emerged. Even though Guardiola tried his best to dispel the rumours, Sane was almost out of the team by the middle part of the campaign.
Bayern Munich made Sane as one of their top transfer targets for the summer and he was brought back to Germany in 2020. Immediately after his return to Germany, Sane wasted no time in scoring on his debut against Schalke. Sane also scored goals for Bayern in the Champions League campaign.
