Lautaro Martinez is an Argentine footballer whose main position is a striker. Born in 1997, he is one of the faces in the Argentinian National Team that will be looking to fill-up the inevitable void left by Lionel Messi's incoming retirement. Martinez began his career in his homeland before moving to Europe with Serie A’s Inter Milan in 2018. The 23-year-old is yet to win any significant honours, with his most notable achievement being a Europa League final, which his team lost to Sevilla.
Lautaro Martinez’s Transfer History
Martinez got in his father's footsteps from an early age joining local team Liniers' youth academy. Here he got heavily involved with the U17 squad, netting 13 goals in the youth league in 2013. He also scored a goal in the National Cup final, but his efforts weren't enough as Liniers went on to lose to Rosario on penalties. However, the performances that he put up caught the eye of Racing Club's board, leading to him joining at the beginning of 2014. At first, he played for the reserve squad of Racing, where he netted 53 goals in a little over 60 appearances. In 2015 Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid had enlisted Martinez as one of their main transfer targets and had offered him a deal. Despite this magnificent opportunity, the striker felt that he wasn't ready at the time and turned down the offer.
He continued playing with Racing's kit and made his senior squad league debut in November 2015. Martinez's debut goal was in the making for a long time as it took him a year to score in November 2016. He received more play-time following Racing's main striker Lisandro López's injury. In 2017 Spanish media outlets released transfer news suggesting that the Argentinian has undergone a medical test with Atletico Madrid and has practically joined the club. However, this turned out to be a fraud heavily criticized by Racing’s board.
It was in the following year of 2018 when Martinez completed his first move away from his homeland. He joined Inter Milan after gossip suggested that the direction in which he was heading might have been Borussia Dortmund. He settled quite nicely with the Italian side, instantly getting to scoring. At the end of his first campaign in Italy, Martinez was once again subject to rumours, with Barcelona and Manchester United having the best transfer odds. However, a move never saw the light. During the 2019/2020 season, he contributed to Inter’s second-place finish in Serie A with just a single point behind league winners Juventus and reached the Europa League final.
After such a successful season for the Argentinian, the football whispers have no way of remaining low. Serious Premier League interest ensued with Liverpool and Manchester City, the main suspects. Despite the tremendous opportunities opening ahead of him, Martinez put all transfer rumours to sleep when he announced that he plans on staying at San Siro. Just 23-years-old the future is bright for Martinez, and he will possibly seek it out of Serie A.
