José María Giménez de Vargas, or Jose Gimenez as he is commonly known, is a Uruguayan central defender. Born on 20 January 1995, Gimenez has largely spent his playing days in Europe courtesy of Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid. However, his career began in Uruguay when he started playing for Danubio, who are part of the Uruguayan Primera division. His debut for the team came in 2012 and immediately this began football whispers about a potential move to Europe. Even though his debut ended in a defeat for the youngster, he started featuring more in the gossip columns as a result.
A move to Europe did not seem far away even though he has only made 16 appearances in his only campaign with Danubio. The transfer rumours turned out to be true when Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid agreed on an £800,000 transfer in April 2013. Gimenez would end up making the switch to the Vicente Calderon for his La Liga debut at the start of the 2013-14 campaign. Yet, this would turn out to be his only appearance of the campaign. As a youngster, Gimenez had to wait for his opportunities but this created rumours. Gimenez registered his first goal for Atletico in December 2014.
From the 2014-15 campaign onwards, Gimenez was a regular in the team. Unsurprisingly, the move to Europe also resulted in the defender attracting a lot of attention from the national team. Gimenez was called up for international duty for the first time in 2013. Since then, he would go on to become a regular for Uruguay and he has already featured in major tournaments like the FIFA World Cup 2014.
A direct result of having been at Atletico for almost a decade is the captaincy status enjoyed by Gimenez within the squad. He is now regarded as one of the leaders at Atletico after Koke and Jan Oblak.
A decent amount of success has come in the way of Gimenez since he moved to Atletico. His time with Danubio did not produce any major honours. However, he has been able to pick up the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in recent years. His first major honour with Gimenez was the Supercopa de España in 2014. Gimenez has been quite unlucky comes to the Champions League after finishing as the runner-up on two occasions. He would also finish as the runner up in the under-20 World Cup in 2013. However, his exemplary performances at the 2019 Copa America led to the defender being named in the team of the tournament.
