Jordan Henderson is an English footballer who plays as a midfielder. Born on 17 June, 1990, Henderson is a footballer from the north-east of England. He started out his career in the youth academy of Sunderland FC. After progressing through the various youth teams of the club, Henderson made his debut for the first-team in 2008. Despite making his debut for Sunderland in 2008, he had to go to Coventry City in order to gain experience. After spending just one season at Coventry City, Henderson came back to Sunderland and established himself as a first-team regular.
As a young Englishman, Henderson was generating quite a bit of transfer news and interest from various clubs. Eventually, these transfer rumours became true when Liverpool approached Sunderland with a £16 million offer in 2011.
Henderson did not get a warm welcome at Liverpool straight away. His performances with the Reds were mediocre initially and he had come to the club at a time when Liverpool were struggling to make a significant impact even after spending a decent amount of money. Unsurprisingly, Henderson was at the receiving end of criticism – from fans and pundits alike. Amidst gossip that the midfielder would be sold to avoid further losses, Henderson slowly started to find his feet at Anfield. He was helped by Liverpool going through a transitional period with Steven Gerrard coming to the end of his career.
Few football whispers imagined Henderson becoming a future replacement for Gerrard – not just in midfield but for the captain’s armband as well. Yet, this did not seem to hinder Henderson who started featuring for England on a more regular basis. Henderson’s debut for England came in 2010 but he became a regular from 2014.
Henderson’s impact at Liverpool increased multi-fold after the departure of Gerrard. After starting out as a box-to-box midfielder, Henderson found success under Jurgen Klopp when he played as a midfielder with a defensive bias. Even though Henderson may not score the flamboyant long-range efforts like Gerrard, he has come up with some incredible goals.
Henderson has never been able to get into double figures when it comes to league goals. His best scoring season came in 2014-15 when he managed six goals in 37 games. Even though his initial days at Liverpool were not successful in terms of trophies, Henderson has been able to amass every major domestic honour with Liverpool – including the Premier League and the Champions League. He has also been a recipient of the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup titles.
