João Félix Sequeira is a Portuguese professional footballer who just recently turned 21. Through the breathtaking pace, dribbling, finishing, and technique, he has earned the nickname The Golden Boy, which Portuguese and Spanish media outlets often use to refer to him. Félix made his debut with Benfica before being bought by Atletico Madrid in one of the biggest transfer deals ever made. Among the football whispers, the talented youngster is regarded as one of the future superstars of football –definitely a player worth keeping an eye out for.
João Félix’s Football Transfer History
- 2015: Porto Youth to Benfica Youth – free transfer
- 2019: Benfica to Atletico Madrid – £114 Million
Félix’s career began with local hometown side Os Pestinhas, before later completing a move to Porto at just the age of 8. His sail at Porto was by no means a smooth one, as the player has personally disclosed in interviews. He even thought of quitting football at this point, but his father persuaded him to keep on playing. After sending him on loan with Padroense, Porto made a decision that surely, they would come to regret later – let Félix go out of a contract. Upon ending up without a club, he quickly moved on to the rival outfit Benfica in 2015, where he finally managed to settle. Playing for the B-team at first, two years later, in 2018, the striker got his first senior squad appearance. Being just 18 at the time, he proved to be of use after netting the only goal in a 1-1 Lisbon derby draw. Furthermore, he set the record for the youngest goalscorer in this long-standing rivalry vs. Sporting CP.
After just a single season with Benfica, the transfer odds of Félix remaining with The Eagles were very slim. Gossip quickly surrounded the promising prospect, with several elite sides making their interest known. Alongside Atletico Madrid, the Manchester rival duo of United and City hit the transfer news claiming they want Félix to ink a contract with them. The thought of playing at Old Trafford or Etihad sure does sound spectacular, but both Manchester sides found it hard matching Benfica's demand to trigger Félix's £100 Million release clause. Atletico did, though, and the transfer rumours were put to sleep when Diego Simeone's side completed the youngster's signing. The £114 Million deal was the most expensive player Benfica has ever sold and the most amount of money Atletico had spent on a new footballer.
His stay at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium is yet to result in any club titles, even though Félix has been racking up the individual honours. The striker’s contract with the Atleti still has six years remaining, during which we will see numerous rumours come to light. Undoubtedly Félix will be one of the most wanted transfer targets in the near future. At just 21 years old, he will be able to play for pretty much any team he desires. Compared to his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese is on his way to becoming one of the greatest modern footballers
