Idrissa Gueye is a Senegalese footballer who plays in the defensive midfield positions. Born on 26 September 1989 in Senegal, Gueye was in European football a lot sooner than expected after he caught the attention of Lille, as per football whispers. The French outfit quickly moved to seal the signing in 2008 and he was made part of the reserves team initially. After making progress, the midfielder was in the first team within two years.
Gueye had become a regular for Lille in Ligue One from the 2011-12 campaign onwards. His performances continued to attract a lot of transfer rumours from clubs across Europe, but there was a great deal of interest from the Premier League. His best season with Lille turned out to be his last, as Gueye made the switch to Aston Villa in 2015 after having scored four goals in 32 league matches during the 2014-15 campaign.
The midfielder would spend just one season with Aston Villa, as the club’s relegation from the Premier League allowed other clubs to trigger a release clause. It was Everton took advantage of the situation with a move in 2016. After managing to stay in the Premier League, Gueye continue to be a dominant presence for Everton in the three campaigns that he would spend at Goodison Park. Since the club was going through a turbulent and unstable period with four managers during this period, Gueye was linked with a top club according to rumours.
French outfit PSG made him as one of the top transfer targets, but Everton resisted attempts to sell him. It was clear that Gueye was starting to outgrow Everton and he was jointly named – along with Lucas Digne – as the club’s player of the year for the 2018-19 campaign. After such accolades, the lack of Champions League football continued to increase the gossip around the midfielder’s future.
An energetic midfielder, Gueye made his debut for Senegal in 2011. He has since featured in more than 65 games for the national team. Despite his debut in 2011, Gueye got to score his first goal for the national team only in 2017.
