Georginio Wijnaldum’s Transfer History
- 2011: Feyenoord to PSV Eindhoven – £4 Million
- 2015: PSV Eindhoven to Newcastle United – £14.5 Million
- 2016: Newcastle United to Liverpool – £23 Million
Wijnaldum's career began with Sparta Rotterdam at the age of 7. At first, Wijnaldum never had an interest or ambition in becoming a footballer. However, this changed when his cousin invited him to Sparta Rotterdam's youth academy. He quickly fell in love with playing football and progressed through Sparta's ranks at an impressive pace. Because he didn't follow the football scene or watch professional matches, the young Wijnaldum didn't know of other clubs besides Sparta. He enjoyed spending seven years with them before finally considering and accepting a Feyenoord offer in 2007.
He made his professional debut the same year and was part of the squad that won the KNVB Cup in 2007, contributing with two appearances. His Feyenoord highlight came when he scored four goals in a single match in 2011. A couple of months later, he made transfer news joining rival Dutch side PSV Eindhoven. Wijnaldum became a regular starter in an instant and was named the club's captain for the 2013/2014 campaign. After the conclusion of the 2014/2015 season, transfer rumors began circulating in the football whispers. Most of the gossip was coming from the direction of the Premier League, with Sunderland, Everton, and Newcastle all interested. A £14,5 Million deal with the Magpies beat all the transfer odds and put the rumors to sleep.
Gini Wijnaldum was quick to adapt to life in the Premier League and featured in every single one league game for Newcastle. Despite his impressive performances, which included scoring four goals in a single match for the second time in Newcastle's history, his club got relegated. The midfielder wasn't keen on playing in the Championship, and his move ensued. At the time, he was a transfer target for Roma, Tottenham, and both Merseyside teams Everton and Liverpool. Wijnaldum ended up joining Klopp's Liverpool in what would be a career-changing move. He went on to become an instrumental player at Anfield, with his career highlight being scoring a brace in 3 minutes in the legendary Anfield comeback against Barcelona in the Champions League. This match was the semi-final, which meant that Wijnaldum's contribution sent Liverpool to the final, which the Reds later won vs. Tottenham Hotspur. Despite his spot at Liverpool being reasonably solid, he has been recently linked with a move to the club to which he did so much damage – Barcelona.
