Gabriel Fernando de Jesus, or commonly known as Gabriel Jesus, is a Brazilian footballer who plays as a centre forward. Born on April 3, 1997, Jesus began his career with Brazilian outfit Palmeiras. It did not take long for football whispers to start getting notice of the young forward, as he was crowned as the best newcomer during the 2015 Campeonato Brasileiro Série campaign. Aware of the significant transfer rumours, Palmeiras decided to offer him a new professional contract in 2014.
Soon after signing this new contract, Gabriel Jesus featured in the first team on a regular basis. His first full season in the top division of Brazilian football brought about four goals in 20 games, but his following campaign provided the breakthrough with 12 goals in 27 games. These goals helped Palmeiras to the league title in 2016 and also put the forward in the transfer odds for a switch to Europe.
After a lot of gossip that Jesus would end up at Barcelona, Manchester City were able to sign him for £28 million in 2017. City were able to agree this deal even before Jesus would make his debut for Brazil. Jesus’ debut for City came in the match against Tottenham in January 2017, but he would have to wait for his time to become a regular owing to the presence of stars like Sergio Aguero. Unsurprisingly, Jesus only made 10 appearances in the league in his first six months at the club but he still returned with a decent output of seven goals.
City were able to kill any rumours about Jesus being sent out on loan, as he featured in 29 games in his first full season with the club. Jesus also scored in double figures for the first time during this season. These exploits did not make him one of the transfer targets for other clubs. Instead, it helped Jesus feature regularly for the Brazilian team, which happens to be full of attacking talent like Philippe Coutinho and Neymar.
The 2017-18 campaign also witnessed Jesus picking up a host of trophies with City including the Premier League. However, his best campaign with club came during the 2019-20 season when he scored 14 goals in 34 games. Jesus was slowly becoming a regular first-team player for City in the continued absence of Sergio Aguero, who was fast approaching the end of his career.
Jesus has already been immensely successful at domestic and international level. He has picked up the Copa America and Olympic gold medal with Brazil. He has already won two Premier League titles, two league cup medals, and one the FA Cup with City.
