Frenkie de Jong is a professional football player from Netherlands who plays for Barcelona as a midfielder. He was born on May 12th, 1997 in a small city of Gorinchem. De Jong started his football career at Willem II and spent his entire youth career at the club.
After making his senior team debut at Willem II in 2015, he attracted the attention of Dutch giants Ajax and became one of their main transfer targets. He moved to Ajax that same year but was loaned back to Willem II for another half year.
De Jong spent his first two seasons with Ajax in and out of the first team, playing for their youth team called Jong Ajax at the same time. By 2017, he became a first team regular and played in many different positions for Ajax – from centre-back to central midfielder, which eventually became his regular position.
The midfielder was a part of the greatest Ajax generation in the past couple of decades – he won Erdevisie in 2019 with the club and managed to reach Europa League final in 2017 and Champions League semi-finals in 2019, in which Ajax was only minutes away from reaching the finals for the first time since 1996.
In 2019, de Jong made transfer news when he moved to Barcelona but his first year at the club wasn’t very successful since they failed to win any trophies. De Jong made his debut for Dutch national team in 2018 and has so far played in 22 games for Netherlands. The Dutch midfielder also has a few individual awards to his name, such as being named to Champions League Squad of the Season in 2019 and being named Erdevisie Player of the Year in 2019 as well.
Frenkie de Jong Transfers and Rumours
- 2015: Willem II to Ajax – £1 (plus 10% sell-on fee)
- 2019: Ajax to Barcelona – £76 million
While Frenkie de Jong didn’t move much in his short career, he was certainly a part of many football whispers and gossip. After going through Willem II youth academy, he joined Ajax when he was 18 years old in a transfer that went against all transfer odds. The agreement was for Willem II to sell de Jong for just £1 and 10% of his next transfer.
After three successful years with Ajax, this deal proved to be very smart piece of business for Willem II. The Dutch midfielder was the key piece of many transfer rumours and one of the biggest transfer targets for many big European clubs. It was reported that both Barcelona and Real Madrid were interested in his services, along with a few Premier League clubs like Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
In the end, de Jong signed for Barcelona for a reported fee in the vicinity of £76 million. This meant that Willem II will receive 10% of this amount, or approximately £7.6 million. De Jong has just started his career with the Spanish giant and it’s unlikely that we’ll see his next move anytime soon.
