Federico Fernández

Federico Fernandez is an Argentina international who plays for Newcastle United. Born on 21st February 1989, the mobile, ball-playing centre-half began his career in his homeland at Estudiantes where he was part of the squad that reached the final of the 2008 Copa Sudamericana; in 2009 won the ‘double’ of the Argentinean league championship and Copa Libertadores; and that reached the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup final against Barcelona. He signed for Napoli in July 2011 and was part of the 2011/12 and 2013/14 Coppa Italia-winning sides and featured in the UEFA Champions League. Fernandez spent six months on loan in La Liga with Getafe before transferring to Swansea City for £8m in August 2014 – making his Premier League debut a month later against Chelsea. Fernandez has more than 30 caps for Argentina, including being a playing member of the squad that reached the final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
