Calvin Stengs is a professional Dutch footballer born on December 18th, 1998 in Nieuw-Vennep, a small town near Amsterdam. The young winger also has Surinam descent but he has already played in one match for the Netherlands on the senior level.
Stengs started his professional career with local clubs SV DIOS and HFC Haarlem before moving to Alkmaar in 2010. He stated with AZ Alkmaar when he was 12 and he is still playing for the club. He was a part of their youth academy for 6 years before making his way into the club’s affiliate team called Jong AZ.
Jong AZ played at the third-tier league competition in the Netherlands at the time and Stengs spent three years there before he was deemed ready for the first team. Since 2017, he appeared in 53 league games for AZ and scored 10 goals in the process.
Stengs was a late bloomer so he didn’t spend much time in the youth squads of the Dutch national team. He only played in 5 games for the Under-21 Netherlands team in his entire career. However, Stengs has already made his debut for the Netherlands senior team in 2019. So far, that was his only appearance, but more are sure to follow in the future.
Calvin Stengs Transfers and Rumours
- 2010: HFC Haarlem to AZ Alkmaar – Free Transfer
As we already mentioned, Stengs only played for AZ Alkmaar on a professional level, so he didn't make any transfer news yet. He did play for a couple of local teams before he was 12 but ever since 2010, Stengs has been at AZ and he seems to enjoy his time here. Even when he was playing for the club’s affiliate, it was a valuable experience that helped him grow as a football player.
In his early career, there wasn’t much talk about his transfer to another club. Stengs didn’t really get to play any first-team football before he was 19 years old, so it’s not a surprise that rumours about his future weren’t circulating among the football whispers.
However, since Stengs became a standard part of Alkmaar’s lineup, his potential for the bigger stage has been pretty evident. The winger has shown his talent with both scoring and assisting in his Eredivisie and Europa League appearances, so it’s no wonder that he is slowly becoming a part of football gossip.
The rumours were the most intense this summer after the Dutch manager Ronald Koeman took over the job at Barcelona. Koeman made Stengs one of his main transfer targets after arriving, but the transfer didn’t come to fruition in 2020.
Stengs still has a relatively modest market value of around £16 million but his recent form will certainly drive that evaluation further up. When his time to move from AZ Alkmaar comes, Stengs is bound to go for a much higher transfer fee, especially if Barcelona comes in with an official bid. Until that happens, he remains one of the most talented youngsters in Europe and one of the brightest hopes of the Netherlands national team.
