Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes, or commonly called as Bruno Fernandes, is a Portuguese footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder. Born on 8th September 1994, Fernandes had trialsith various Portuguese clubs like Boavista FC before eventually being inducted into the Novara youth setup following several football whispers. His move to Italy came as a surprise, but Novara did provide him with the opportunity to make his senior debut.
Fernandes was instrumental in his only season with Novara and this prompted transfer rumours to bigger clubs like Udinese. Eventually, it was Udinese who signed him for £ 2.25 million in 2013. This provided Fernandes with the opportunity to make his first appearance in the Italian Serie A. An attacking midfielder, Fernandes grabbed four goals in 24 league matches in the 2013-14 campaign. He soon became a regular for the Udinese team over the next two campaigns before getting a move to Sampdoria in January 2017.
Against all the transfer odds, Fernandes made a return to Portuguese football when Sporting CP came calling for his services in the summer of 2017. The return to his homeland appeared to spark a new life within the midfielder, who went on to contribute an incredible 31 goals in his first two campaigns in the Primeira Liga. His performances and goals started receiving the attention of top clubs. A return to Portugal also helped Fernandes make his presence felt in the national team. The midfielder made his debut for the Portuguese team in 2017.
Manchester United made him as one of the transfer targets and the Red Devils finally made a move for his services in January 2020. An incredible £49.5 million was paid for his signature. Aware that United were in a transitional period, Fernandes did not expect a huge amount of game time, but he made a major contribution whenever he was on the pitch.
Bruno Fernandes returned with impressive numbers – eight goals in just 14 league appearances – in his first Premier League campaign. The consistency of the Portuguese footballer turned out to be so good that he was able to keep out bigger stars like Paul Pogba out of the team.
