Achraf Hakimi is a Moroccan footballer who plays as a winger or full-back. He was born on 4 November 1998 in the Spanish capital of Madrid. He chose to represent Real Madrid from a youth team level and ended up joining the La Fábrica academy at the age of eight. After coming through various levels of the academy, Hakimi found himself playing for the reserves – Real Madrid Castilla – in the 2016 campaign. After a lot of football whispers, Hakimi found his name in the pre-season tour of the United States for the 2016-17 campaign.
Hakimi would go on to make his debut for Real Madrid in the 2017-18 campaign. Owing to injuries for first-team regulars like Nacho and Dani Carvajal, Hakimi was brought into the first-team setup to make his debut against Espanyol. His Champions League debut also came in the same season but there continued to be rumours around his future due to his lack of regular appearance in the first-team squad.
These transfer rumours hit a new high when Borussia Dortmund entered into the race to sign Hakimi on a temporary basis. Madrid decided to loan out Hakimi to help the player gain first-team experience. The defender moved to Dortmund on a two-year loan deal and the Bundesliga club made the most of Hakimi’s presence. Hakimi was a regular during his two seasons with Dortmund. Despite being a defender, he ended up scoring seven goals for the German outfit in the league.
At the start of the 2020-21 campaign, it became clear that Hakimi would not be coming back to Real Madrid on a permanent basis. The transfer odds for Hakimi’s permanent move away from Real Madrid were shortened owing to considerable interest from other top clubs. Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte made Hakimi as one of the key transfer targets in the attempt to get the club to the top. Due to the extended contract which Hakimi had with Real Madrid, Inter had to pay £36 million to sign him in the summer of 2020.
Hakimi is an extremely quick full-back who has the ability to find forwards with amazing accuracy. Hakimi also has the ability to play as a winger if required. This versatility turned out to be one of the factors that attracted Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte.
Despite being born in Spain, Hakimi chose to represent Morocco at international level. He was born to Moroccan parents. Even before Hakimi was starting to establish himself in the Real Madrid first team, he made his debut for the Moroccan national team in 2016. He has since featured in more than 30 games for the African nation.
