Born in Pando, Uruguay, Hernandez began his career with Central Espanol before transferring to one of the country’s biggest clubs, Penarol, for the 2008/9 season. In February 2009, Italian side Palermo signed the tall, powerful 18-year-old – who would go on to score on his debut against Inter Milan. During five years in Sicily he would make more than 100 appearances, scoring 33 goals, including 14 times in 28 appearances to help seal promotion to Serie A during 2012/13. Hull City paid a then club-record £10m for the much sought-after goal scorer on summer transfer deadline day 2014, and Hernandez went some way to repaying that fee with 22 goals as the Tigers sealed promotion back to the Premier League in 2015/16 – he was the subject of a failed £20m bid from Aston Villa in August 2016. Hernandez represented Uruguay U23s at the 2012 London Olympics and has over 25 caps for the senior side, including two matches at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
