The World Cup 2022 is just around the corner and the anticipation on who can make it to the squad is at all times high! For you to get on the speculations wagon here is all the information that you need.
World Cup 2022 squads
The 32 countries that have qualified for the World Cup 2022, have to provide a call-up list with some specifics for the determination of their squads. There are 64 matches in totality with 8 groups of 4 national teams each, bidding against each other to move ahead to the knockout stages.
However, the official squads of each qualified team will be announced before the start of the World Cup season. How this decision works is based on past performances and statistics of each player that comprises a team. This selection is done in two lists. The first one is called the ‘realise list’. The other one is ‘the final list’, which counts with fewer players.
Specifics of the Release and Final lists
The Release list contains 55 players with all the relevant information. From their names to their physical characteristics such as weight or height. Of course, it also has to contain the club’s name where they belong to.
Since FIFA increased the number of players in the team, for the final list, the World Cup squads had to take a total of 23 players. And the final squad must include three goalkeepers.
However, in the run-up to Qatar, the parent club will make a further quota expansion. That is in order to minimise damage in the event of cases of some illnesses appearing in any of the squads: in Qatar 2022, the squad lists will be made up of 26 players taken from the previous list.
For now on, 15 players who are not in the starting eleven for each match can now be placed on the substitutes’ bench as an alternative.
How to replace a player?
If the player definitely has to be replaced, he would have to be nominated by his respective team. In this case, is FIFA who has the last word. This only happens in order to preserve the health of every member of the competition.
After being revised, FIFA will declare whether or not the problem is of real importance. The player who is covering the replacement could be chosen from the release list but it’s not totally necessary. He has to use the same jersey number as the one who left.
FAQ World Cup squads
Can a footballer be part of the World Cup squads in a country where he was born?
The answer is yes. There are so many footballers that have more than one nationality and they can choose which national team to represent.
What happens to the rest of the players on the release list?
The 29 players who do not make the final list are not usually travelling to the World Cup. They remain in training with their clubs or take a holiday. However, they must be available when their coach requests them to cover for one of the 26 teammates.
