The 24-year-old Frenchman started every Premier League game in his debut season at the Vitality Stadium, but Bournemouth have made clear they are in no rush to part with one of the best-performing full-backs in the division.

The strongest force behind this rumour is Manchester United's urgent need for a long-term left-back, a position they tried and failed to fill five different ways across the summer window.

The clearest force against it is Bournemouth's near-total lack of incentive to sell: they have no financial pressure, no replacement lined up, and a player whose value is still rising on a contract that runs until 2030.

Whether this deal happens comes down to a single question: does Bournemouth's willingness to sell arrive before Manchester United's patience runs out and they sign somebody else?

Financial viability

The fee itself is not the obstacle here, because £60m is roughly what United paid for Leny Yoro in 2024 and less than any of the three midfield signings they completed this summer.

What complicates the finances is what United have already spent: Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba cost a combined £150m, and with a Moderate Squad Cost Ratio rating, further outlay would need to be offset by sales or departures.

Bournemouth's position makes that harder still, because the Cherries owe Rennes a 10% sell-on clause from the £14.4m deal that brought Truffert to the south coast in June 2025, meaning they would net closer to £54m from a £60m sale and have every reason to push for more.

The contract length is the real leverage: four years means Bournemouth can set the price, walk away from any bid they dislike, and wait for a better offer without any of the deadline pressure that forces a sale.

Buying club need

Shaw's 2025/26 season was, by his own standards, a minor miracle: 38 consecutive Premier League starts after years defined by long-term injury absences, a run that will have bought goodwill at Old Trafford but not enough to paper over the succession problem.

That problem is now acute, because Shaw's contract expires in June 2027 and no extension has been discussed, leaving United facing the real possibility that their only senior left-back walks away for nothing at the end of this season.

The draw for Truffert is stature and salary rather than playing time, because he is already an undisputed starter at a Europa League club and would simply be swapping one guaranteed first-team spot for another.

The salary incentive, while unquantified, is likely to be transformative: Truffert earns £35,000 a week at Bournemouth, which would make him the lowest-paid outfield player in United's first team by a distance, and even a modest United deal would multiply his earnings several times over.

What has not emerged is any public push from the player himself, no interviews, no social media activity, no agent briefings of the kind that tend to force a selling club's hand, and that silence keeps this firmly in the territory of a move that would interest the player rather than one he is actively pursuing.

This is the pillar that anchors the entire score in the Possible band rather than pushing it higher, because almost nothing in Bournemouth's situation points toward a willingness to sell.

The only scenario in which Bournemouth's stance changes is if the fee reaches a level that makes the sell-on clause, the absence of a replacement, and the loss of their most reliable defender all worth absorbing in a single summer.

Market momentum

The timing of this rumour matters: it surfaced within hours of Hall's new Newcastle contract, which tells you this is United's fallback rather than a plan they had been quietly working on all summer.

Ornstein's involvement gives the story genuine weight, because his track record on transfer intelligence is among the strongest in the industry, but even he frames it as a future possibility rather than an active negotiation, using the phrase “potentially a deal to be done next summer” rather than language that suggests talks have begun.

The gap between monitoring a player and actually signing him is vast, and United's left-back search this summer, in which Hall, Balde, Lewis-Skelly, Salinas and Raum were all linked and none arrived, is a reminder of how many of these early-stage stories end in nothing.
