Wigan vs Cardiff: Our top betting tips

Both of these teams are locked in mid table with just a solitary point between them. Will there be more than that come 5pm Saturday? Find out with our Wigan vs Cardiff match preview with free tips, predictions and odds mentioned along the way.

Wigan to win it

We’ll be honest, nailing down a prediction in the 1X2 market for this game was tough with both sides having doubts over them. We have, however, settled on an outcome and are backing Wigan to win. The Latics home form is poor with no win in five but Cardiff aren’t exactly unstoppable on the road as evidenced by the fact they’ve won just one of six league away games this season. Look beyond Wigan's home form in isolation though and their general points return has been half decent; they've banked nine from the last 15 available to them. On top of that, they've not lost to Cardiff since 2015 and beat the Bluebirds last time they entertained them at the DW.

Both teams will score

Our next prediction for this match sees us backing both teams to score. Cardiff have seen three of their last five games end with a ‘nil' in the scoreline but they have notably averaged one goals scored per game over that period. Wigan meanwhile have seen three of their last five matches end with both teams scoring whilst they have scored seven goals in that period; that's 1.4 goals per match. When you combine those stats with a head to head record that shows each of the last two meetings between the sides have seen the net bulge at both ends the ‘yes' bet seems like the value bet.

A midtable clash

Wigan and Cardiff both sit right in the middle of the pack right now in the Championship table and, in truth, they will probably end the season somewhere in that region too. As they lock horns here though one interesting element to consider is the fact they could easily swap positions with Cardiff's point return of 15 just one fewer than Wigan. It gives both a little added incentive not to lose.

Wigan will be delighted with their start to the season but with Gwion Edwards and Jordan Cousins sidelined, things could still pick up further. That won't help them here though. Instead the performance of Will Keane and Max Power could prove the difference.

Wigan Predicted lineup – Amos, McClean, Tilt, Whatmough, Nyambe, Power, Naylor, Broadhead, Keane, Aasgaard, Magennis

Cardiff will be keen to avoid Wigan opening up a four point gap in the standings but any result they do earn here will need to come without the services of Rubin Colwill, Kion Etete and Jamilu Collins. Perry Ng's performance at the back will be vital to the Bluebirds getting a result.

Cardiff Predicted lineup – Allsop, Romeo, Ng, Kipre, Nkounkou, Wintle, Ojo, Rinomhota, Sawyers, O'Dowda, Robinson
