Wigan travel to Cardiff on January 14th in what can only be billed as a Championship relegation six pointer.

Cardiff vs Wigan: Our top betting predictions

Wigan might be sat rock bottom of the Championship but they're only four points south of their hosts, who are in 20th. Will the Latics give themselves an almighty boost here or can Cardiff pull away? Find out with our Cardiff vs Wigan match preview with free tips, predictions and odds mentioned along the way.

Cardiff to inflict more misery on Wigan

Wins have been few and far between for Cardiff with just two victories across their last 10 but we are predicting they'll chalk up another three points here. The wins haven't been coming of late but seven games with a solitary defeat also isn't a disastrous stretch. Wigan, for example, would love that run. They have only won once in their previous 10 and, notably, haven't taken anywhere close to the same amount of draws; they've lost four of their past five and haven't won in six outings. They also lost to Cardiff last time these two sides met, which was back in October.

We'll see goals at both ends

Our next prediction for this Championship relegation battle backs both teams to score. Cardiff have seen three of their last four home games end with goals at both ends. Wigan meanwhile have seen both teams score in each of their last three away games and in four of their last five. The reverse fixture, which was just a few months ago, also saw goals for both sides as it ended 2-2.

So, that gives you some insight to how the different bookmakers see the action unfolding. How though do the bookies odds translate into probabilities ahead of this game and how might that impact your view of our predictions? Let's find out.

Cardiff odds: 1/1 (2.00) – 50%

Draw odds: 12/5 (3.40) – 29%

Wigan odds: 14/5 (3.80) – 26%

Cardiff being priced at 1/1 (2.00) by the bookies tells you that this clash is far from a foregone conclusion. That said, Wigan coming in at considerably longer odds tells you that they'll be hard pressed to take maximum points. The odds on the draw are pretty average as draw predictions generally go.  Away from the match result markets, the bookies are anticipating a fairly low scoring encounter with the under 2.5 goals bet heavily odds on.

Check out the predicted lineups ahead of Cardiff vs Wigan

Cardiff

Cardiff may well be struggling in the Championship right now but the clean bill of health they have heading into this game is a real positive. As for the specific lineup for this match, we're expecting the Bluebirds to set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Jaden Philogene-Bidace coming in for a start after his FA Cup display.

Predicted lineup – Allsop (GK), Simpson, Kipre, Ng, Sang, Wintle, Ralls, Robinson, Whyte, O'Dowda, Harris

Wigan

Wigan could really do with some help right now but whilst the likes of Tom Pearce, Jason Kerr and Charlie Hughes are possibility going to be back in with the group this month. This game itself probably comes too quick for them. Will Keane, however, will play despite chatter of offers coming in for his signature this month with Nathan Broadhead having been recalled from his loan spell.

Predicted lineup – Jones (GK), Nyambe, Whatmough, Tilt, Bennett, Power, Cousins, Lang, Keane, McClean, Fletcher

Player to watch

Will Keane has been linked with a move away from Wigan during the early part of January but he's likely to start in this game regardless and he's probably Wigan's best chance of finding a winner. He's currently their top scorer on nine goals in the league with two bagged in his last five starts but his all round game is impressive too with his hold up play and ability to link with others a particular highlight of his skills set.
