Manchester United’s 2022/23 season was a bitter disappointment, and the board is very aware of the fans’ frustration during these turbulent times. Whilst Glazers are accepting bids for the club itself, Manchester United seem quite active on the transfer markets these days. The Red Devils only made €55.34m from selling the likes of Dean Henderson, Anthony Elanga, Fred, Matej Kovar, Alex Telles, and Zidane Egbal, but that doesn’t seem to bother the board too much.
The Red Devils’ lavish spending in this summer transfer window reached a whopping €196m with the transfer of Danish goalscorer Rasmus Hojlund. And it looks like the board will satisfy coach ten Hag’s demand for Sofyan Amrabat, which might mean Manchester United have spent nearly a quarter billion on transfer fees this summer.
However, we have to give credit to the men in charge, as they managed to poach a robust defender such as Sergio Reguilon on a season-long loan deal. Here are the top reasons why Manchester United have signed Sergio Reguilon.

Reguilon brings options at the back
Amid the injuries of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, coach Erik ten Hag had no option but to search for talent elsewhere, as Manchester United youngsters can only get the team so far. Sergio Reguilon will add much-needed defensive options, as the Spanish player is known for his versatility.
Usually operating on the left of the central defenders, Reguilon is equally adept at playing in the heart of the defense. There aren’t many world-class defenders that the Dutch manager can count on, so having Reguilon on his side is a giant plus ahead of this tiresome season.
Harry Maguire is deemed unworthy to wear the red jersey, so he’ll either be sold as soon as possible so that Manchester United can cover some of the losses following his record-breaking £80m deal taking him to Old Trafford.
Sergio Reguilon can cover both the left-back and center-back position for Manchester United, which is something not many players can do.
With Reguilon comes experience
Manchester United issues at the back are nothing new. The board was searching for options outside the Premier League to replace Maguire, Shaw, and Malacia. However, such a decision could cost the team dearly, as you never know if the player you are getting will be able to adapt to the harsh conditions in England.
However, Sergio Reguilon already proved his worth throughout the past two campaigns. Sure, during the 2022/23 campaign, he went back to Spain to play for Atletico Madrid but before that, he made a total of 52 Premier League appearances for Spurs, scoring twice, and assisting on six occasions. This proves that Reguilon will be able to make an instant impact on how the Red Devils play.
Sergio Reguilon comes cheap
As stated earlier, Manchester United already spent a fortune on new players ahead of this season. Sergio Reguilon joins the club on a season-long loan deal with no option to buy at the end. If Erik ten Hag is pleased with the Spaniard, Manchester United will have to go through the well-known process of signing a new player in the summer of 2024.
Reports have it that the club from Manchester will only have to cover Reguilon’s £120,000 salary, which isn’t something the Reds can’t afford.
Reguilon is the first Spurs player to join Manchester United since Bulgarian legend Dimitar Berbatov signed for the team 15 years ago. And we all know just how impressive Berba’s stay at Old Trafford was. If Reguilon’s is half as memorable as Berbatov’s, Manchester United will surely get their money’s worth from this deal.
