It seems likely that the 30-year-old midfielder, Fred, is on his way out of Old Trafford after being at the club since 2018. Fred has been a long-standing and often reliable player for the club, and he is a guy that always wears his heart on his sleeve. Nevertheless, a Fred transfer fee has been agreed between Man Utd and Turkish club, Fenerbahce. And if the recent reports are correct, Man Utd has accepted this bid to let Fred leave the club during this transfer window.
Many Utd fans will think this is a shame, while many might consider it a blessing, especially with his first-team role being very uncertain for the 23/24 season. Anyway, taking this into account, it would not be at all surprising if Fred was to depart the club over the coming weeks. Of course, should this occur, the conversation of who might replace Fred at Man Utd naturally arises.
As you’ve probably guessed, that’s what I will be addressing right here. And I believe I’ve found three possible Fred placements at Man Utd, all of which have a chance of materializing before August is over.
Sofan Amrabat – Fiorentina
Man Utd has been interested in Sofan Amrabat for several weeks already, and it’s public knowledge that this guy is on Utd’s radar. As you might recall, Amrabat was rather formidable for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup, and this caught the attention of many high-profile clubs. Yet he remained at Fiorentina immediately after the World Cup. But now, Amrabat seems to be a prime target for Man Utd, and the 26-year-old would be a great replacement for Fred if the club can complete the deal.
As for the value of Amrabat, reports suggest that Fiorentina would be willing to let him go for around £26 million. Of course, that’s a higher price tag than what the club stands to get for the sale of Fred. Yet if the Maguire deal comes through, which is worth £30 million, Man Utd could sign Amrabat while still keeping some spare change.
Romeo Lavia – Southampton
The next possible Fred replacement is worth much more than Amrabat, but Man Utd do have their eye on him at the moment. Romeo Lavia currently plays for Southampton, although he wants Premier League football right now – that much is clear. And on that note, Man Utd is not the only club with an interest in signing Romeo Lavia. In fact, some might say that Utd has arrived late to the negotiations table, as Chelsea and Liverpool have both made offers for the 19-year-old, which have been rejected.
Lucas Paqueta – West Ham
For the third and final replacement, we are going to get a little adventurous. Of course, Man Utd has spent a load of money this summer to sign some big names. Yet with more departures on the horizon, it’s not impossible that the club’s finances will improve enough to shoot for a guy like Paqueta. At the moment, West Ham are receiving bids from Man City in the region of £87 million, yet such bids haven’t been successful.
Additionally, with Man Utd having several Brazilian internationals in the squad, it’s plausible that Paqueta would love to reunite with these guys at the club level and sign for Man Utd.
