Much has been made of Arsenal’s recent defensive issues, and Marcel Tisserand is the latest centre back that the club are said to be interested in.
The Monaco defender has been linked with a move to the Gunners, although he isn’t the experienced veteran that fans have been crying out for over the last few months.
The young French player has hardly figured for Monaco since joining up with the first team, spending time on loan at Lens and Toulouse over the past couple of seasons as he completed his footballing education.
Regardless, the Gunners have a pressing need to bring in more defensive support, and the player is another that could be viewed as one for the future.
Arsene Wenger has been quick to admit that defensive fragilities were exposed against Liverpool following injuries to his first choice centre back pairing, and Arsenal’s quest for an elusive title win will be harder if they can’t keep pace with the competition.
Tisserand can pay in a number of positions across the back line, and he’d be able to do a decent job as backup when more established stars begin to return from injury.
Reports in France state that Tisserand’s agent has been contacted by Arsenal with a view to a potential transfer, but the player is currently in talks with St Etienne, and it’s believed that he’s close to agreeing terms with the French side.
Valencia centre back Shkodran Mustafi is also being chased by the Gunners, which means they're probably going to get the defensive backup they need in one form or another.
The Valencia manager recently admitted that Mustafi will probably have to be sold as they attempt to balance the books at the Spanish side, and it means that he could be a little cheaper than some of their more high-profile targets.
Despite the signings of Granit Xhaka and Rob Holding, Arsenal have left a number of fans exasperated as they continue to wait for their famously frugal manager to get the players he needs to take the club to the next level.
Attacking options are what they’ve been missing out on, with the search for a new striker rolling on in the backdrop.
Nonetheless, they probably won’t be able to cope without signing another defender in the time being, and the Arsene Wenger himself has admitted that he’s ready to spend money.
“You do not sign players because you think it’s very important or not. I think it’s very difficult to find players and identify them.
“That’s why everyone is on the market for the same players and the deals. We are ready to spend the money we have.”
It doesn’t sound like Wenger, but it seems like his hand has been forced by the latest spate of injuries at the Emirates.
Sating the fans is one thing, but it’s clear to most that Arsenal need signings at both ends of the field. They might not have that new striker they’ve been craving, but filling the gap at the back is also a pressing issue.
Tisserand is a young, talented French player, so it’s only natural that he would be linked with a team that have traditionally looked to the channel in search of cheap additions to their first team squad.
He could simply be a backup for Laurent Koscielny and co when they’re fully fit, or he could be viewed as one for the future. Rumours from France suggest that he’s probably going to move to St Etienne, but there’s no reason why Arsenal can’t muscle in if they’re truly interested.
Either way, they need defensive cover desperately, and they’ve got a few decent targets that could plug the gap as the Gunners aim to take control of their destiny.
