West Ham v Freiburg first scorer prediction: Key names in the dogfight for first place

These two sides that have already secured qualification from UEFA Europa League Group A, as West Ham and Freiburg do battle for top spot in the final standings.

With the Hammers claiming a 2-1 victory on matchday two in Germany, just a point here will see them finish top, and fasttrack them through to the Round of 16 stage, as they chase more European glory after winning the UEFA Europa Conference League last season.

Freiburg will be desperate to avenge their prior loss to West Ham in early October though, and they’ve found success on the road of late. A 1-0 win away to Wolfsburg at the weekend made it back-to-back away victories by the same scoreline for the visitors, whilst they’ve won both of their away Europa League outings this season.

That will give them plenty of confidence heading into this showdown. The away side have also netted 17 goals through their five matches in the competition to date – the most of any side in the tournament, so West Ham will have to be at their ebst to deny them again here.

West Ham v Freiburg first scorer prediction – Our picks

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham) – 11/2

Without a doubt, Jarrod Bowen has proven himself to be West Ham’s player of the season so far. Through 19 first-team appearances to date, he has netted 10 goals, which goes a long way to explaining why the England international is the bookies’ favourite to open the scoring here.

However, it must be mentioned that just three of his strikes this campaign have come on home soil, which explains why his odds are not much shorter than they currently are. Equally, he’s yet to score in the Europa League, though he did score the winner in the final of the Europa Conference League at the end of last season.

Danny Ings (West Ham) – 11/2

West Ham’s veteran striker Danny Ings surprisingly comes in as the joint-favourite, alongside Bowen, to open the scoring in this crunch clash with Freiburg at the London Stadium.

So far this season, Ings has struggled for form across the board, as injuries have limited his playing time, making him goalless across his 14 club appearances. In fairness, however, the one-time Liverpool forward has played just 378 minutes of action.

Mohammed Kudus (West Ham) – 13/2

Next up on the list is West Ham midfielder Mohammed Kudus, who has looked fantastic in short spells this campaign since joining in a big money move from Dutch giants Ajax over the summer.

He began his season by scoring four times in three matches from the Amsterdam side, netting a hat trick in Europa League qualifying, whilst he’s since gone on to score five times in 19 outings for the Hammers. One of those came in this competition at this venue, though only one has come in the form of a match opening strike.

Junior Adamu (Freiburg) – 7/1

The first and only Freiburg player in the top five shortest odds to be first goalscorer in this crucial Europa League clash is Junior Adamu.

Like Kudus, he also only joined his new side this summer as the 22-year-old moved from RB Salzburg to south-west Germany. Since then, he’s scored just one goal for Freiburg, in what has proven to be a frustrating start for the youngster, though that sole strike did come in the Europa League during a 5-0 win against TSC Backa Topola.

Lucas Paqueta (West Ham) – 7/1

Finally on our list of picks for first goalscorer in this match between West Ham and Freiburg is Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paqueta for the home side.

From the centre of the park this campaign, Paqueta has dazzled in general and he heads into this match with five goals to his name across 21 appearances across all competitions.

Whilst that doesn’t sound like too big of a haul, three of those strikes have come across his five Europa League group stage outings, including the opening goal in the return fixture between these two sides in Germany.
