Tottenham are close to announcing the signing Barcelona defender Emerson Royal after having had a £25.7 million offer accepted for the 22-year-old, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano. Tottenham have been in talks with Barcelona for almost a week, as manager Nuno aims to strengthen the right side of the defence. So far, Japhet Tanganga has been utilised as the right back as a result of Serge Aurier falling out of favour.
Emerson Royal first joined Barcelona for around £10 million back in January 2019. After failing to hold down a first-team spot, Emerson was sold to Real Betis for around £5 million before he came back to the Camp Nou only the summer for around £8 million. As a result, Barcelona stand to make a substantial profit on the player. Spurs have taken advantage of Barcelona’s financial troubles to make a swift signing just before the transfer window shuts down tonight.
Spurs have made a brilliant start to the season and they are the only team with a 100% record after the opening three matches. Even though Spurs are yet to concede a goal this season, the team has the potential to improve a lot further and Emerson could be one of the major signings for manager Nuno. Bryan Gil and Pape Sarr have been the major signings of the summer for Spurs, who are keen on building from a disappointing 2020-21 season that saw them finish outside the top four.
Meanwhile, the arrival of Emerson will speed of the departure of Aurier, who has been heavily linked with a move to Lille. Erik Lamela, Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose, and Moussa Sissoko are the summer departures from Spurs.
The departure of Emerson creates more headache for Ronald Koeman, whose Barcelona squad is already stretched thin due to budget cuts and many key players leaving the club in the summer.
