Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata appears to be on the verge of an exit from Old Trafford. The Spaniard is out of contract in the summer and he has rarely featured for the club this season. Now, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has delivered a damning verdict saying that he does not have the option to include Mata even if the 32-year-old has delivered whenever called upon. A £37 million signing from Chelsea back in 2014, Mata has been a consistent performer for United even during the troubled times for the team.
He has featured in more than 250 games for the team, but the 2020-21 season has turned out into a nightmare with only 10 appearances in all competitions so far. However, he will be turning 33 in a few months and FourFourTwo reports that there is a high possibility of a return to Spanish football for the former Valencia man. Incredibly, Mata has set his sights on a return to the Mestalla, where he had a successful spell as a youngster before moving to Chelsea in 2011.
The return to Valencia will complete a full circle for the midfielder, who is adept at playing in a number of positions. Even though Mata has been able to deliver performances whenever called upon, there is simply no space in a Manchester United team that is performing at its very best. Solskjaer has been able to land on the midfield combination which includes the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.
Solskjaer has hinted that he would be interested in reducing the squad size in the summer. As of now, Mata can discuss terms with a foreign club and he is likely to take up a good opportunity that comes his way knowing that this could be his last season with United.
