We have taken a look at the Sheffield United new signings so far in the January transfer window, as well as the confirmed departures and how much impact they are likely to have on the team.
It is safe to say the Blades have struggled to adapt to life back in the Premier League thus far, as they currently sit rock-bottom of the table on just 10 points from 21 games, having scored the fewest amount of goals (17) and conceded the most (51) of all teams in the division. They made the choice to replace Paul Heckingbottom with their former manager Chris Wilder, in the hope he can perform the miracles he has done with the club in the past, and keep them in the league.
Sheffield United new signings: January 2024 arrivals
Confirmed Sheffield United signings in January 2024
Sheffield United had a net spend of around £28.7m in the summer, bringing in the likes of Cameron Archer, Gustavo Hamer, Vini Souza, Auston Trusty, Benie Traore, Anis Slimane, Tom Davies, Luke Thomas, James McAtee and Yasser Larouci.
They have only made one January signing so far, and could make more by the end of the window, but their new arrival has already made an impact. They have also been linked to some other potential interesting names, such as the return of Iliman Ndiaye to Bramall Lane having left to join Marseille in the summer.
Ben Brereton Diaz – Villarreal (Loan)
Brereton Diaz had experienced English football before with Blackburn Rovers, scoring plenty of goals in the Championship, and so the Blades decided to take a punt on him this month. He has not disappointed so far, scoring on his Premier League debut to help earn a 2-2 draw at home to high-flying West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.
Confirmed Sheffield United departures in January 2024
Sheffield United's struggles this season can largely be put down to the sales of two of their key players from the last campaign – Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge. Enda Stevens, Billy Sharp, Jake Eastwood and Kyron Gordon also left the club, while Jack O'Connell retired.
There have only been a couple of notable departures so far in January, with players leaving Bramall Lane already after only arriving in the summer…
Benie Traore – Nantes (Loan)
After arriving in the summer, Traore has left Sheffield United on loan in the hope that he will get more regular game time. The striker only made nine appearances in total over all competitions for the Blades, but has already started two games for new club Nantes, and even grabbed an assist on his Ligue 1 debut for them – which suggests that he is already settling in well.
Luke Thomas – Leicester (End of loan)
Thomas returned to Leicester City early following his loan spell at Sheffield United, despite making 13 appearances in all competitions. He seemingly lost his starting place under Wilder, and was adjudged to be no longer needed in the squad.
