Scott McTominay Bayern Munich transfer: What’s the latest?

Scott McTominay has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Bayern Munich. The midfielder has been strongly linked with an Old Trafford exit this summer and the Allianz Arena is now looking like a possible destination. Here’s the latest with the potential Scott McTominay Bayern Munich transfer.

The addition of Casemiro from Real Madrid last summer, as well as Christian Eriksen on a free transfer, was always going to make life tougher for Scott McTominay at Old Trafford. The Scotland international started 28 of the club’s Premier League games during the 2021/22 season but was relegated to much more of a fringe role last term, making only 10 Premier League starts.

Despite Fred having recently joined Fenerbahce, the door appears to remain open should McTominay wish to depart and a big offer come in. The 26 year old has clocked up just 7 minutes of action so far this term for the Red Devils and has been strongly linked with a move to West Ham United who reportedly had a £30m bid for the midfielder turned down earlier this month.

Scott McTominay Bayern Munich transfer – Latest update

Interest from Bayern Munich in Scott McTominay is a significant late twist in the final week of the transfer window. Despite some notable additions, West Ham are likely to still have funds available should they wish to move again for the midfielder but a move to Bundesliga giants Bayern may appeal more to the player.

The German club’s interest was first reported in Bild with Thomas Tuchel keen to bring a new holding midfielder to the club. Manchester United’s asking price is believed to be in the £35-40m range and it remains to be seen whether or not Bayern would be willing to go that high.

One possibility is a potential swap deal involving Ryan Gravenberch. The Dutchman was already viewed as a possible target for both Manchester United and Liverpool and Gravenberch is well known to Erik ten Hag after the duo worked closely together at Ajax but has struggled for regular game-time in Munich.

McTominay’s departure would leave the United boss a bit short on depth in midfield, particularly with Donny Van de Beek also potentially departing in the coming days. However a deal that saw Gravenberch move in the opposite direction would fill that void with a young player of significant potential.

Manchester United have also reportedly approached Tottenham about a move for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg with the Dane an alternative replacement for McTominay should he follow Fred out of the door.

How would McTominay fit in at Bayern?

Bayern Munich are hoping to sign a new holding midfielder to supplement their options in that area of the pitch. Joshua Kimmich is very much their star deep lying midfielder and is a certain starter in Tuchel’s best eleven, however McTominay would hope to compete for a role alongside the German international should he move to the Bundesliga.

He’d face strong competition from Leon Goretzka who has started at least half of Bayern’s Bundesliga matches in all five of his seasons at the club. He has also played in both of the club’s league matches so far this term with the Bavarian side starting with wins over Werder Bremen and Augsburg.

McTominay’s potential arrival would be a direct challenge to Goretzka, but the Scot would also face competition from Austrian international Konrad Laimer who arrived in Munich on a free transfer from RB Leipzig this summer.

Overall, McTominay’s prospects of regular first team football would perhaps slightly increase should he move to Germany, although he’d still have a real fight on his hands in order to force his way into Tuchel’s team on a regular basis.
