Scotland vs Cyprus: Top Two Predictions

Here are our Euro 2024 predictions for Saturday's clash between Scotland and Cyprus in qualifying Group A. Scotland will be expected to get off to a winning start to the Euro 2024 qualifiers as they play host to a distinctly average Cyprus side. The Scots have won all of their previous meetings with Cyprus so anything but 3pts this weekend will be considered disappointing for Steve Clarke's men.

Scotland & Over 2.5 Goals

Our first Scotland vs Cyprus prediction concerns the match result and total goals scored by both teams. Scotland have a 100% record against Cyprus, winning each of the pair's 7 encounters over the years and all of those matches have produced over 2.5 goals. Five of Scotland's and four of Cyprus' last six international matches have witnessed at least three goals being scored, so you can see why we're backing goals on Saturday.

Both Teams to Score

Our second Scotland vs Cyprus prediction is for both teams to score during the 90-minutes. Each of the last five meetings between these two countries have ended with both teams getting on the scoreboard, with each of the last four head-to-heads ending 2-1 in Scotland's favour. Both teams have also scored in three of Scotland's and three of Cyprus' last five competitive and non-competitive matches, adding further weight to our prediction.

Scotland vs Cyprus Lineups

Scotland

Scotland will give one of their three uncapped goalkeepers their international debut this weekend as the likes of Gordon, McLaughlin and Marshall have either not been selected or have now retired from international duty. Jack Hendry, Scott McKenna, Stephen O'Donnell and Ryan Fraser have also missed out on selection for the Euro 2024 qualifiers this week. Dominic Hyam of Blackburn Rovers is the only outfield player that is uncapped.

Predicted Lineup – Clark (GK), Hanley, Robertson, Tierney, Hickey, Armstrong, McGregor, McGinn, McTominay, Gilmour & Dykes

Cyprus

Cyprus only have one uncapped player in their squad, goalkeeper Alexander Špoljarić of Karmiotissa but the big loss in the latest squad is striker Pieros Sotiriou who has scored 12 goals in 58-caps but won't be available this week. Andreas Avraam, Fotis Papoulis, Matija Špoljarić, Fanos Katelaris and Neofytos Michael have also failed to make the cut for one reason or another.

Predicted Lineup – Demetriou (GK), Antoniades, Kyriakou, Laifis, Ioannou, Gogić, Kastanos, Spoljaric, Charalambous, Antoniou & Pittas

Player to Watch: John McGinn

McGinn has had a fairly quiet season for Aston Villa but he always seems to up his game when it comes to Scotland.

The combative midfielder has scored an impressive 15-goals in 52-caps for his national team and those added goals from midfield really take some of the pressure off his strikers who are admittedly, less than consistent in front of goal.

We're backing McGinn to up his game once again in the blue of Scotland and to help his side to an opening victory against what is an average Cyprus squad. McGinn is the second most experienced player in the Scotland side behind Andrew Robertson and he has more goals than any other player in the team.
