Sancho to Dortmund: Man United to demand enormous £50m fee

Borussia Dortmund are seeking to make Jadon Sancho’s return to Signal Iduna Park permanent, but are facing a potential roadblock, as Manchester United demand what would be a record fee from the Champions League semi-finalists.

Sancho to Dortmund: why BVB want to keep him

Everyone remembers Jadon Sancho’s first spell at Borussia Dortmund. The England international had been at Manchester City’s academy, but moved to the German giants to get more game time, at just 17.

Sancho adapted for a season, then took the Bundesliga by storm, scoring 37 goals and assisting 41 between 2018/19 and 2020/21. His game was about more than just numbers though. He was a joy to watch, with his individual play rich in flair and creativity, allowing him to strike up productive relationships with both Erling Haaland and Achraf Hakimi, among others.

Manchester United signed him in summer 2021, after a protracted transfer saga. The Red Devils shelled out £80m for him.

But despite the odd moment of brilliance, things have never clicked for Sancho at Old Trafford, for a multitude of reasons. Things came to a head in autumn 2023, when Erik ten Hag claimed that Sancho was not training well enough. Sancho publicly denied this, and was consequently frozen out.

Dortmund came and rescued Sancho in January. He has taken time to find his feet again, with just two goals and one assist in ten Bundesliga appearances. But Dortmund know the quality of player they have, and are determined to get him back to his best.

Sancho’s dormant brilliance resurfaced in last week’s Champions League semi-final. The 24-year-old was given the man of the match award, and completed a stunning 13 dribbles against Les Parisiens.

Sancho to Dortmund: why the fee is difficult

Borussia Dortmund have never spent more than £30m on a signing, with their record addition being Ousmane Dembele back in 2016 for £29m.

According to renowned football journalist Ben Jacobs, United expect £50m for their banished star, which is the price they quoted to Saudi club Al-Ettifaq last summer.

Matters are complicated by Dortmund having not one, but two Premier League stars on loan that they’d like to keep.

Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen has shone on BVB’s Champions League journey so far, and Dortmund want to make the Dutch left-back’s move permanent. There is a £35m release clause in Maatsen’s contract at Chelsea.

Jacobs added “a combined outlay for both of £85m is not seen as feasible”. Unless they can negotiate both fees down significantly, Dortmund may have to pick one or the other.

Fortunately for Die Schwarzgelben, Manchester United are reportedly plotting something of a fire-sale this summer, meaning they may be open to negotiation.
